Confused by IBM's messages around content management?

by Volker Weber

People are confused by IBM's messages around content management in the portal space. Do not mix up their use of Content Manager and content publishing. Here is the short list of buzzwords directly from their site: (emphasis mine)

WebSphere Portal provides a customizable single point of access to information, applications and people for increased productivity.

WebSphere Portal content publishing provides non-technical users the ability to control the content that is published to portals & web sites.

IBM Content Manager provides an enterprise content management framework--- a centrally managed repository for all types of content produced anywhere in a company.

WebSphere Portal is offered in three versions: Enable, Extend and Experience. An IBM Content Manager license is included in Experience. Content Manager is sold separately, but already integrated with the Enable and Extend offerings.
