Review of 'The Petstore Revisited'
by Volker Weber
The Middleware Company (TMC) recently published a benchmark report which compares the Sun J2EE PetStore with a functionally equivalent version created using .Net technologies. The J2EE PetStore version was improved from the original code by TMC employees, while the .Net version was written and optimized by Microsoft employees.
Since the previous benchmarks have been considered unfair by most developers, TMC conducted this new benchmark using an updated version of the J2EE PetStore that has been "extensively optimized for performance and scalability". The optimization work was done during 5 weeks by "two experienced Middleware developers", and TMC is a training company who are "experts with J2EE Web-based application servers".
As this review will show, the report is seriously flawed. It contains both errors, halftruths, and lies.
