I have done this for a while already and it works quite well. Does not get rid of all ads but reduces them just nicely. Only forgot to mention it here. Thanks for reminding me. :-)

With Safari, you can put the CSS anywhere and then enter that location in the preferences.

You might also want to check Bannerblind for Mozilla.

This project seems to be abandoned, but the last available release works fine with Mozilla 1.3 - don't want to miss it.
