Go get iChat AV

If you have a Mac and you are not using iChat AV yet, go get it. It is amazing. No, you don't need the new iSight camera. Your Mac will do. Instant internet phone! I just tested it with John Head on the other side of the world and it is almost like being there. He was using his Powerbook and I was sitting here with Lucy, no microphones or headsets, and we could easily chat with the built-in gear.

iChat AV is free as a beta that runs out at the end of the year. You will need to buy Panther (MacOS X 10.3) when that comes out to use it in 2004 and beyond.

Some older G4 Towers ( like mine ) don't have built in mics, so the audio chats tend to be one way! But I also listened to someone across the Atlantic in France and the sound quality was truly amazing. It is a very compelling piece of software.

Well, that sounds like a good incentive to get iSight. There is a mic included. :-)

I d'loaded iChat AV -- I've never used iChat before. Pretty good I thought. I don't have a camera, and iSight won't work on my Mac, but the software's pretty good, especially for a beta!

Almost forgot: I believe you can also buy iChat AV once it goes gold, without having to fork out for Panther. I think Apple are quoting a price of around $30 for Jaguar users.

That said, based on what I've heard from those with preview releases of Panther, the OS is fast enough already to be a compelling upgrade from Jaguar — even for those with old models.

iSight is simply amazing. Small, Light, and simple to use. Put it together with iChatAV, and its the best audio/video experience I have ever had via computer. Apple didn't invent this, but they perfected it.

Ok, enough KoolAid for one day :D

Does iChat AV work the IBM's Sametime?

Joe Canadian, 2003-07-02

iChat works with AIM. Sametime works with AIM. That's about it.

Volker Weber, 2003-07-02

Just to be clear, your saying if I use an AIM account, I can use iChat AV software to talk to Sametime clients? Is that what you are saying?

Joe Canadian, 2003-07-02

Sametime is a dual mode client. You can log into a Sametime server and at the same time log into the AIM network. So, you in fact are an AIM user with Sametime if you log in there.

iChat also logs into the AIM network. So, yes, you can talk to a Sametime user, if and only if he is logged into AIM as well.
