Spaß mit Betreffzeilen

by Volker Weber

Ich lese Betreff-Zeilen in E-Mails immer recht aufmerksam, und dann bleibt man manchmal an solchen Perlen hängen:

leistungunddisaster.gif

IBM Presseinformation SG/325/2003:

IBM Boosts Performance and Disaster Recovery Capabilities with Shark
Enhancements

Eight Times Faster Throughput and 4-to-1 Channel Reduction Yield Fast,
Cost-Effective Solution

October 21, 2003 -- Armonk, NY -- IBM boosted its disaster recovery options
for customers with enhancements to its IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage
Server (ESS), also known as Shark, that will allow for fast data transfer
that is up to eight times faster and reduces channels by a factor of four
over current ESCON technology.

The company also introduced a standards-based Copy Services application
interface to further continue IBM's leadership in implementing open
standards for storage management, and a new Turbo II processor that is
designed to speed ESS transactions by up to 30 percent over an ESS base
Model 800.

Powerful, Cost-Effective Disaster Recovery
The key feature allowing the performance benefits and channel reduction is
the introduction of Fibre Channel support for IBM's Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy
(PPRC) software, a disaster recovery, data migration, and remote backup
solution for ESS. Fibre channel replaces current ESCON channels, resulting
in fewer total channels and increased cost-effectiveness.

"Much like Internet access, a large portion of the cost associated with
disaster recovery solutions is tied to telecommunications costs," said Cindy
Grossman, director of disk marketing, IBM Storage. "By eliminating many of
the channels previously required to perform automated backup, the Shark
improvements announced today can reduce those costs by up to 50 percent."

Improved disaster recovery manageability will also allow changes to be
tracked to data on the backup volumes while the primary storage is
unavailable. These fail-safes help to greatly reduce the time needed to
re-synchronize PPRC volumes after switching from the primary to the remote
site.

An event being held today in New Jersey will demonstrate long distance data
mirroring based on the new enhancements to illustrate benefits for enhanced
disaster recovery, improved performance, lower cost, and open standards
driven manageability. The event is hosted by IBM Premier Business Partner
Computer Network Technology (CNT) and will demonstrate PPRC mirroring over
an IP network between CNT's new IBM TotalStorage Solution Center (TSSC) in
southern New Jersey and CNT's remote demonstration site in Minnesota, a
distance spanning 1200 miles. While this demonstration will present an
implementation spanning a vast distance, similar implementations of PPRC
over Fibre Channel solution are expected to expand even further to a global
reach.

These latest enhancements further IBM's mission for ESS, to provide an
enterprise-class storage offering that includes robust copy services that
can be implemented across a wide variety of heterogeneous open systems and
mainframe servers for disaster recovery.

Standards-Based Interface for Copy Services
Also, IBM has made significant enhancements to the ESS API, adding Copy
Services management based on Storage Management Initiative Specification
(SMIS) and continuing its leadership in implementing open standards for
storage management. SMI-S is an industry standard interface developed by
the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), an independent industry
body. The use of the standard interface helps customers and management
software vendors to develop applications to a single standard, eliminating
the requirement for developing unique, proprietary interfaces for each
vendor.

Faster Performance with Turbo II Processor and new Configuration Option
IBM's new Turbo II processor option for ESS offers up to 30 percent
performance improvement over an ESS base Model 800 for high-capacity
customers. IBM also has a new configuration option called Arrays Across
Loops which can greatly improve performance for sequential applications,
offering improved performance of up to 1.8x times on a single array.

The new ESS enhancements will be made generally available through IBM and
its business partners on November 21, 2003.

CNT EXTENDS NEW IBM DATA MIRRORING SOLUTION OVER 1200 MILES

Grand Opening of CNT's New Jersey-based IBM TotalStorage Solution Center
Includes Demonstration of PPRC over Fibre Channel for Disaster Recovery

MINNEAPOLIS, MN and LUMBERTON, NJ, October 21, 2003 - CNT® (NASDAQ: CMNT), a
global expert in storage networking solutions, today announced that they are
the first provider to remotely extend a new IBM enterprise disk mirroring
solution for storage networks. Today's event demonstrated the benefits of
long distance capabilities for disaster recovery and business continuity
solutions, as data was copied over a distance of 1,200 miles between sites
in Minnesota and New Jersey

The solution uses CNT's UltraNet Edge Storage Router, which reliably extends
IBM's Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC), for Fibre Channel, a controller-based
disk mirroring application for IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server
(ESS) Model 800.

The event will demonstrate PPRC mirroring between CNT's new IBM TotalStorage
Solution Center (TSSC) in southern New Jersey and their remote demonstration
site in Minnesota over an IP Network. Each location of the demo includes an
IBM ESS Model 800 and a CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director with an
integrated UltraNet Edge Storage Router WAN module, which is currently
included with every new FC/9000 purchase.

"We're proud of our long history of delivering IBM storage solutions to our
customers, especially when we are providing unique value through our
UltraNet technology for remote storage," said Ed Walsh, vice president of
alliances, marketing, and strategy at CNT. "Our unmatched expertise in IBM
disk mirroring solutions allows us to be first to market for extending
PPRC-FC over longer distances, thus giving customers key remote storage
options."

This event is also the grand opening for CNT's new TotalStorage Solution
Center in Lumberton, NJ. One of more than 150 centers around the world,
CNT's facility is able to demonstrate customer business value through a
variety of IBM and multi-vendor storage solutions, both local and remote,
including disk mirroring, remote tape, enterprise backup, FC/FICON SANs,
storage virtualization, storage resource management, and server
consolidation. At this facility, CNT can provide customer demonstrations,
proof-of-concept projects, and staging and integration work. CNT also has
the ability to demonstrate these capabilities on a global scale at their
European Executive Briefing Center in the UK.

"Long distance mirroring capabilities are critical to help customers achieve
comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuance solutions," said
Tom Simonson, vice president of worldwide storage of disk marketing, IBM
