In search of secure storage on PocketPC
by Volker Weber
Does anyone of you have suggestions for a secure password/pin storage on PocketPC? I am trying to replace YAPS that Ute used on her Tungsten. I need something similar for the XDA2.

Microsoft API doc vs. what Evangelists say is contradictory. Surprised?
If it's possible to run .NET 1.1 on your PocketPC device ... (mscorlib.dll) then it would be trivial to roll your own private key, symmetric encryption capability. I know that this stuff is relatively trivial to do on the platforms that the msdn doc says the platform supports as I've used pretty much all flavors of the crypto providers. Doing the same thing with the underlying crypto apis is just a bit harder but obviously doable.
If y'all can swing a way to get me one of these devices on a semi-permanent evaluation basis I'd be happy to experiment ;-)
Dataviz PasswordsPlus, but it's not free ($29.95), works well for me - I use the Palm version.
I should add, that the main reason I use PasswordsPlus is that it allows me to access them / maintain them on a PC/Mac as well as on the PDA.
Does not work for me. I downloaded 1.003 for the Mac/Palm, installed it. But I cannot for the life of it activate the Sync checkbox. It shows the dialog, I can click the box but it does not stay on. Without that I cannot install to the Palm.
Anything else in the open source space? I would have more trust in that. But PocketPC developers don't seem to subscribe to the open source idea. Or the other way around: Open source developers don't use PocketPCs. :-)
I found a patch.
Ah - I installed before Panther and it worked fine, I have updated since to 1.003, also without problem. Let's see what you think now you can synch it.
I find it a bit slow to open on the Palm, but I have over 100 entries, some of them quite long - I use it to store more than just PINs or passwords and also have a bottom-of-range Sony Clie - so you probably wont have that problem with your super-duper machines!
It's not working for me on the Palm, most likely because I use iSync. Will try it on the XDA2 though.
I don't use iSynch, so that could be the reason.
Try Password Safe http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/
I've been using this for some time. There's a desktop version and ppc version. You can synchronize the two with ActiveSync....works well for me. It's open source to boot.
Hi Volker,
It's also not free, but I use eWallet from Ilium. It's pretty decent software. You can find it here:
