End of free for iLife upgrades?

by Volker Weber

When Apple introduced iLife, the only application you had to buy was iDVD. The rest of the apps you could get or update for free. Today Steve Jobs announced iLife '04 for $49 which is quite a good value. He did not say anything about upgrades. Tunes remains free for now. Free downloads for iPhoto and iMovie have been removed today.

Do you expect to be able to download new versions of your existing applications for free from Software Update?

Well, I certainly would like them to be a free upgrade, but I doubt they will. So if iTunes remains to be free and because I don't need iDVD, iMovie or GarageBand, I probably end up being required to pay $49 just for a few improvements of iPhoto... That's not a good value, I think !?

Why can't they sell the iLife-Programs separately ? 15$ for iPhoto and we have a deal...

I would expect iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie to continue to be free if they are not sold separately. I don't play keyboards, so music composition software is not of much use to me.

I guess we will have to see what happens.

Joerg -- I thought he said included with every new Mac. I remember thinking, "Can I justify buying another Mac?" I concluded -- no.

I only care about iTunes (which seems to remain free) and iPhoto. And, yes, I'd really be pissed off if I'd have to buy the whole iLife just to get an iPhoto upgrade ...! :-P
