Noisy images, but wow, great menus

by Volker Weber

Over at Gizmodo:

PC Magazine reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F828, an 8-megapixel camera that was first marred by slipshod image quality, but after a firmware upgrade warrants a second look. The four-color Sony CCD still has some problems getting the colors quite right, but good controls, nice weight balance, and logically laid-out menus put the $999 DSC-F828 back into consideration for the prosumer market.

So the pictures are still shitty, but the menus are great? Come on, guys. Maybe 8 megapixel is a bit too much for a sensor of that size and there is nothing software can do about that.

Problems with the 828 seem to be worse than expected. A photo-friend of mine acquired one recently and was able to take shots in surprisingly good quality - for a while. After a few weeks, the image quality suddenly dropped to the low level mentioned in most reviews, with truckloads of error pixels and noise. Now we are curious to hear what Sony has to say about this... So if you really want a Sony, get the 717. If noise (or lack thereof) at low ISO is all that counts, the Digital Rebel _is_ your choice, though the entire rest of that camera is really cheesy. Can't wait to get my hands on a D70 :-)

I wouldn't trust some PC Magazin with a digi cam review anyway ... ;-) Good in-depth review can be found on dpreview.com. (And I did expect Canon's PowerShot Pro 1 to perform better ... *sigh*)
