Welcome Scooter

There is a new member in vowe's magic flying circus. Scooter is a Compaq AP400 dual processor machine. It had a two headed display with two graphics cards. I disabled one of them since Scooter only has one screen.

I was able to boot the machine into Knoppix without any problems. Currently installing Fedora Core.

Update: I had an issue with installing Linux on the machine that was not easy to spot. After a reboot it failed to read the boot loader from the HD. It turned out that it needed a cold reboot to recognize the new boot loader. I tried Fedora Core first, then SUSE Linux 9.0 and stayed with SUSE because it supported the hardware better. I will ask SUSE to send me 9.1 and will upgrade to that once it arrives. Oh dear, SUSE looks like My First Linux.

Nice machine. Also seems to be very silent.
What are you planning to do with it? :)

Indeed, it is very silent. I was surprised to find that. What do I want to do with it? Have not decided yet. I will first run a "burn-in" test for a few weeks to see how stable it is.

Ute's present?

Oliver Regelmann, 2004-04-30

Yup.

I just love those machines. Instead of buying today's el-cheap boxes, I'd save an old machine that was heading for the trash bin, especially those that were the cutting edge five years ago. Dual processor machines, very well built and relatively quiet. They cost a fortune when they were introduced but nobody wants them today. Scooter is my third machine of that class.
