Looking for picture offload

Sony introduced a device that lets you copy all photos from a memory stick or compact flash and delete the original. With one click!
However, Sony apparently does not have any plans to market the device outside of Japan. So I am looking for a different device that does the same. Should have a compact flash slot and offload all photos with a one button operation.

Kann das X-Drive II aus eigener auch empfehlen - so simple & useful. Akku reicht lange, man kann es auch leer kaufen und selbst eine Platte einbauen und via USB2 ebenfalls als externes Laufwerk verwenden.
X-Drive ist vermutlich die Standardlösung. Eigener Erfahrung nach funktioniert es ganz gut, wenn auch nicht übermäßig schnell. Nachteile: 1, für das was es kann, ist es ziemlich schwer und klobig (und in China-Barock obendrein); 2, man hat keine völlige Gewissheit, ob die Übertragung wirklich geklappt hat da 3, es keine optische Kontrollmöglichkeit in Form eines kleines Displays gibt.
Wer etwas mehr Geld ausgeben will, ist daher z.B. mit dem Nikon Coolwalker gut bedient, denn hier kann man die Fotos gleich auf dem eingebauten Monitor kontrollieren. Für sehr wichtige oder z.B. nicht wiederholbare Aufnahmen ist die Mehrausgabe daher gerechtfertigt. Andere Hersteller, auch aus dem Zubehör, müssten ähliches haben. Oder man verzichtet auf one-touch-operation und macht es ganz anders ;-)

das Thema hat mich vor 3 Jahren schon verfolgt, so dass ich bei Archos hängen blieb, 20GB Festplatte, MP3 Player und mobile Photostorage via Adapter, allerdings eben kein "one" button design.
But: Hier gibt es seit ein paar Wochen die Lösung in Form eine Archos AV400. Der kann nun Videos wiedergeben, MP3 und er hat einen CF Port integriert. Das Ding hat kein Touchscreen, so dass alles über diese Navigationsbuttons erfolgt, das aber sehr gut gelöst ist.
Das Ding ist relativ klein, gut designed und hat erstaunlich lange Akkulaufzeit.
Ich muß zwar ein wenig tiefer in die Tasche greifen, bekomme dafür aber ein deutlich ansprechenderes Gerät (Video,MP3,Foto , Voicerecorder oder auch Backup) zum akzeptblen Preis (ca. 500€ hier, US ca. 500USD).

NACHTRAG zum Archos A420 und A480 (ist dicker, hat 80GB, größeren Akku). Eines Tages wird es die festplattenbasierten MPEG MP3 Geräte auch erweitert um PDA Funktionen & Gamings geben (für Archos gibt es OpenSource Projekte), unsere klassischen PDAs werden "GPS basiert navigierende" Smartphones und eben Einstiegs PDAs mit zusätzlichem Gaming Focus und Navigationsoption (neue Sony Clie Nachfolger).

Transferring pictures from my Camera Memory Card
One of the nice things about the AV420 is that it has the compact flash module built in to it. You do not need to have a separate module to do this. I turned on the unit and inserted my Compact Flash card with images on it. Immediately the card was recognized. A browser then appears which shows the contents on the Compact flash module on the left side and the contents of the the AV420 in the ride side. By moving the to the right I can open the folder where I want to move the images. I can then go back to the left side of the browser to the compact flash card images and by hitting the middle soft button I get an option to copy all or just the highlighted image to the hard drive of the AV420. Clicking copy all copy all the images VERY fast. It copied 15 1.3MB images in about 12 seconds.
I further tested this function with the Archos 4 in 1 adapter and an SD card and got the same flawless results.
The one negative factor in this is that the Compact flash slot is only Type I compatible which works with most Compact Flash cards but not with the thicker Microdrives which are Type II. It seems this must have been kept this way to keep the unit smaller. I am sure there must be an adapter available to read CF Type 2 in a Type I slot.
Danke für die Hinweise. Aber hier wird gerade eben nicht die allumfassende Multimediaschiessmichtotmaschine gesucht, sondern eine USB2 Festplatte mit CF2+ Slot und genau einem Knopf. Ideal wäre sogar, wenn das Ding dann laut und vernehmlich läutet, wenn es fertig ist. Das hat einen simplen Grund: Der Fotograf darf möglichst überhaupt nicht abgelenkt werden.
aber das Sony Teil hatte ein Preisschild von 320USD ohne TAX und so.... das finde ich dann schon ein wenig heftig, nur als Bilderspeicher, ohne die Bilder anschauen zu können. Das ist für mich ein wichtiger Aspekt, denn die Family ist nicht immer so Web begeistert wie wir.... hier

Mmh, ich wollte grad den iPod Media Reader oder den Digital Camera Link für den iPod von Belkin vorschlagen. Aber die haben wohl auch keinen Knopf. Und ne Klingel schon gar nicht.
Aber "laut und vernehmlich läutet" und "Fotograf darf nicht abgelenkt werden" widerspricht sich irgendwie ;-)
Andreas, es geht nicht um eine Familie sondern um eine professionelle Lösung. Das Gerät muss schneller Bilder von CF Medien runterladen, als eine EOS 1D wieder draufspielt. Und der Operator der Kamera hat keine Zeit, sich um irgendwas anderes zu kümmern als Bilder zu machen.

Also, the device got a lot of attention in the Russian Federation. However, for I can't read kyrillic letters, I don't know whether it's availbale there. If so, there's a chance I could get hold of one, though :-)

Bei der Anzahl Files auf einem MicroDrive Medium lang der cp Befehl. Ich hatte/hab das selbe Problem, und keine der Hardwarelösungen taugt wirklich. Also kette ich irgendwo meinen Powerbook an und ab die Post. Die Karte formatiere ich aus Sicherheitsgründen in der Kamera, nachdem die Bilder im Rechner sind.
Ausserdem: Ich hab immer ein fischiges Gefühl dabei, wenn eine Korea-Embedded-Hardware meine Flashkarte nach dem Trasnfer löscht. Nenn' es abergläubisch oder paranoid, aber ich hatte dadurch auch noch keinen Datenverlust bei meinen Bildserien.
Tests mit dieverser Software und der Shellscript-Lösung haben ergeben, dass das Script die schnellste Alternative ist.
Einen PCMCIA-CF-Adapter kann man unter OSX nicht wirklich verwenden, weil der Mac auf Flashkarten anfaengt zu pollen und alle Rechenzeit mit Warten im Devicetreiber verschwendet wird. Die Benutzung eines USB 2.0 6in1 Drive zu EUR 8,70 ist also zu empfehlen ;-)
Achja, den Source-Namen muss man anpassen, da die 1D einen anderen Volumenamen vergibt als meine 10D.

If we are talking about professional use, there is the interesting situation that with today's cameras, 1 GB CF cards are just too small, 2 GB CF cards unproportionally expensive and Microdrives too slow. An obvious solution would be to use a whole bunch of 1 or 2 GB CF cards so that emptying them during assignment becomes unnecessary.
Or, if you cover sports or other events where speed is all that counts, switch to a dedicated reportage camera that solves the storage issue by transmitting new photos on the fly via WLAN onto a FTP server of your choice (so your editor can use them bascially without delay). Then again, having spent quite a considerable amount of money for an otherwise absolutely excellent camera, this might not be an option.

Wahrscheinlich sündhaft teuer, aber wenn man sich schon ne Kamera für 4k leistet und die Optik dazu macht das ja auch nicht mehr viel aus ;-)

Ich verstehe die Frage nicht. Meine Kodak steckt man in die Cradle, drückt genau einen Knopf, und alle Dateien werden vom in der Kamera steckenden CF2-Speicher auf die Festplatte verschoben. Software muss unter WXP auch nicht installiert werden. Einfach das ganze Geraffel an einen USB-Port hängen, Strom drauf, und gut. Na gut, man muss wohl noch einmal eine Bestätigung wegklicken "Wirklich von der Kamera löschen?" Ist also ein Knopfdruck und ein Klick. Letztere lässt sich aber sicher irgendwo ausschalten.

So ist es. Es geht nicht um ein paar Dutzend Bilder sondern um 2500 Bilder pro Tag, deren Übertragung vom Flashspeicher auf HD ca 3 Stunden dauert. Der Engpass ist nicht USB sondern das Flash Interface.
