I don't think that's any danger on Linux installations outside the United States. But I don't think I'd install RAID 6 in Florida...
with today's drives, this one seems excessively paranoid to me.
With today's drives, you cannot be paranoid enough.
Rough estimate: a single particle of room dust on a 400GB disk's surface would account for several hundred kB.
Also, drives are hardware. The switch from the end-90s' plastic bearings to liquid/ceramic is a great step, but mechanical rigidity is not really deliverable in mass-market consumer products.
You get the point.
I won't trust my data to a single drive.
