OSXplanet - a wonderful screen backdrop
by Volker Weber
OSXplanet is the most incredible screen backdrop I have seen in a while. You can select which planet you want to see, from which direction and in which projection. Overlay cloud maps, storm, volcano or earthquake data, and satellite positions.
The picture above is centered over Sardegna, with cloud maps active. The programs knows where it is dark, but cannot update which lights are currently turned on. ;-)

Funny, I saw that just yesterday : http://www.die.net/earth/
How this image is built is very interesting : http://www.die.net/earth/how.html
Gaston.
That is fantastic -- thanks.
I find it interesting that you have quite a few applications docked but not running, Volker. Since you pointed out Quicksilver (which I notice you have running), I always use it to launch applications, find addresses and such. I can't imagine using a computer without such a capability, and really feel lost when I'm on a Windows machine.
My dock is really just an extra menubar now, where I check RSS headlines in NetNewswire. I wonder if 'Spotlight' in Tiger will fully replace Quicksilver or other launchers. I wouldn't miss the dock at all. Perhaps Apple will convert it into a proper switch for multiple workspaces.
And before somebody asks why this is only available for the Mac, please check out xplanet.
Hm reminds me of Mike Cowlishaw's PMGlobe.
Windows Version is there->http://www.cary.demon.co.uk/pmglobe/
Palm version -> http://www.cary.demon.co.uk/pglobe/
And for those who need it: The OS/2 Version ;-) http://www.cary.demon.co.uk/pmglobe2/
Although the last 2 versions are a lot less spectacular since they do not use the bitmaps from NASA's "Visible Earth" Project. (here-> http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/ )
