Not ONLY in Japan. I traveled rainy Europe with a full size umbrella slung across my back like a bow. I could slip a loop off the tip for quick draw, almost as fast as Continental auto-switchblade umbrellas I saw en masse in Germany.
This holder doesn´t look to be built only for umbrellas! Or didn´t you watch Kill Bill?
Maybe it is "only in Japan" but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea! I've got a huge golf umbrella that would be much more convenient to holster when the weather is a 'maybe'.
Watch somebody with a sabre to see why it is a bad idea.

Armin, it's an "aurora borealis" generator, which the Japanese believe is good luck to make love under... Hence the design...
