Site news: Removed comment submission form and sidebar from print

by Volker Weber

Ole has suggested that I remove the sidebar from printed pages and Mike has explained how to do this. I have taken this one step further and also removed the comment entry form from the printout, which now looks like this for the post below:

You may need to reload the stylesheet.

Hhm, Doesn't that reduce the value? If I want to print an article because of the content AND the comments? Would be interesting to know how your audicence is using the print-outs.

Yes, that could be rather annoying and perplexing to the user. It's quite possible someone may actually want to print out readers' comments. Sometimes they're interesting and insightful (like this current comment ;) )

We don't want to reduce the value and not print insightful comments as yours. I am now leaving out the empty comment entry form at the bottom of the page. How does that sound?

I could have anticipated that you would not like it if my content would be printed but not yours. ;-)

Very well done, Volker.
Reduced this webpage's number of DIN A4 sheets to be printed from 4 to only two without touching its value at all.

I had initially thought that I needed to go from a table layout to floats (which I don't want to do). Maik has shown me an easy way to do this while retaining the current layout.

You're leaving the comment form out of the printout? Now I can't write out my comments by hand and FedEx them to Germany! ;)

Seriously, good move.
