This is working much better than expected

Both Snoopy and Lucy sync addresses, bookmarks and calendars once an hour and stay synced. Works without a glitch.

But 100 Dollars or Euro a year to get this? I don't know. The rest of the package is pretty useless to me. I have a website, I can have as many email addresses as I want and 50 meg of webspace? You've got to be kidding. OK, 50 bucks more and you have 1 gig.

Apple is offering an email-only package for $10 a year. That's about what I would pay for a sync-only package. Anybody listening?

Volker, please spare us the joke of iSync, what it is right now.
I hope the SyncFaery[tm] hits the operating system before Tiger release and gives us users real syncing without .Mac or other painful and proprietary "We-are-Apple-thus-we-won't-tell-you-the-details" thingamabobs.

Perhaps they'll just add a tech note, or two, on how the iSync plugin interface works. That would suffice, for starters.

iSync is what I can use today. When you come up with something better, I will be happy to use that.

Having said that, I agree that this proprietary solution is very unfortunate.

iSync is completely useless for me, regardless of what changes Apple makes to it, until it is possible to export from the address book in a format which allows me to extract it to a database, such as Filemaker - so I can print the addresses exactly as I want to. I will continue use the Palm Desktop until that happens.

News about opening up iSync

John, exporting all contacts to a single vCard should do the job, shouldn't it? If you need something else, you could also use AppleScript.

Martin Pittenauer, 2004-12-19

I remember the days iSync was supposed to be going down the SyncML route, i.e. being fully compliant with that standard. AFAIK, that still hasn’t happened, but please correct me if it has... ;o)

Ben Poole, 2004-12-19

John, as Martin said, the addressbook can export to vCard. There is no better standard for addresses.

Volker Weber, 2004-12-19

Volker, I agree, with you.
John, if you don't want to do the scripting yourself, there is a easy solution to export from your OSX panther addressbook into Filemaker 7.
It's called vCard creator and is available as a demo here. It's working with limited imported/export capacity.
After testing it, I bought the full version and it works flawless.
Recommended.

OK everyone - thanks for the comments. I did think about vCard, but didn't get any further than that because I thought it was going to be a messy multi-step process. I even bought a book about AppleScript, but it is still waiting to be read :-)

I will have a look at AppleScript, and possibly vCard creator over the holidays!
