Treo vs Razr

by Volker Weber

Now that I have some experience with both the Treo and the Razr, here is a list of things I prefer in both phones:

Razr
- clamshell design does not need a keyguard
- much lighter and thinner
- large buttons to dial numbers
- superior sound

Treo
- quick switch between ring and vibrate
- handles much faster (picking from address book etc.)
- full keyboard for text entry (as in SMS messages)
- loads of applications for PalmOS (navigation etc.)
- full address book

The Treo also does not display the Genion homezone indicator. The camera in the 600 is much worse than the Razr, the 650 is better. They all have VGA resolution, which is large enough for me.

Anyway, I think I need a second chip. Removing one from the Razr is a major PITA. And I do want to use both phones. If I had to give up one of them, it would be the Razr. YMMV.

To put it with a Chris deBurgh tune: "it's the classical dilemma - between the head and the heart". Of course you like all the cool features of the Treo, which enable you to take your business plus the more serious, organised part of your life with you, but the Razr is soooo beautiful that you try really really hard to find reasons to do without the Treo. Which - of course - for all the beauty makes you miss functionality. I know how that feels - I'm in a similar catch 22 ever since I got my Crackberry.
A nice solution would be to be able to get a SIM for data only. That could stay in the Treo or Blackberry, while the voice SIM goes into the beautiful phone. Ah, one can dream...

Yeah, this is one the modern dilemmas – one clunky do-everything device or more than one specialized device.  It’s really the same issue for laptops…..I outlined  a Bluetooth solution here, which I haven’t found in the USA marketplace yet….until then I’ve gone for a small phone that goes in my pocket everywhere and a separate PDA that I don’t carry when I’m not working.
