OK, done that.

Interesting. I have never been to CeBIT, but I always have thought of it as a very German event. These pictures show almost every marquis or sign in English. Has it become more of a European or worldwide event?

Also, these are fantastic pictures. Very artistic.

Ed, my first visit there had the main purpose to meet the guys from Accton. This year, I made my 16th trip to CeBIT.

What I find most amazing is how sharp they are. Look at the EXIF data. The first photo was shot a 1/10th of a second exposure!

The Lumix has an Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) derived from their Camcorders. Please note that the original resolution is higher (i have downsized the photos with Graphic Converter for easier uploading).

@Ed: It's been quite a while since I last went to CeBIT, but anytime I was there, I always felt it was a very international event. It's held in Germany, yes, but other than the location-specifics (such as accomodation, food, etc.), no Germanish attributes, I'd say.

Ragnar Schierholz, 2005-03-14

@Ed: Sorry, but this is just a typical American limited view of the rest of the world. Since it started CeBIT has always been the worlds largest ITC trade show. Its approach and the exhibitors list have always been global.

During the last years, some of the major vendors have begun to stay away from the show - Oracle for example is focussing on its own shows instead, just like some others. And Dell is the only tier-one vendor that never ever showed up in Hannover (at least not officially).

All major American events like Comdex - in its good old days - or pc expo were (just a guess) smaller than just Hall 1 of the Hannover fairground - and the fairground has 27 halls these days...

A slashdot reader has walked around CeBIT with a head-mounted camera and an external mic. Hours of video posted here.

"typical American limited view of the rest of the world" -- I guess I'll just go back to shopping at Walmart and eating at McDonald's. (both of which are in Germany...)

There was no reason for the dig -- I've been to Germany 13 times (and my 14th visit is already scheduled). I have even been to Hannover, but not the area where CeBIT is held. That's why I was impressed with your pictures.

Anyway, my point is, my German colleagues are often the only ones I ever hear buzzing about our presence at CeBIT -- from where I sit, I don't hear much about international involvement. Maybe that's uniquely an IBM/Lotus position.

Ed Brill, 2005-03-14

@Ed: Hi, don't take my comment too personally. It was just a bit polemical. I know that you've been to Germany a couple of times before. So you're pretty much ahead of the vast rest of the U.S., who MIGHT know Heidelberg and/or the Hofbräuhaus and maybe Neuschwanstein in case they did a "All-of-Europe-in-5-days"-trip ;-)

And if you've never made it to CeBIT so far, why not schedule one of your next stays here for March 2006? We can meet at the fairground then and have a nice beer with Volker. And thanks for the compliments regarding the pics.

Thomas Cloer, 2005-03-14

Thomas, your comment was a bit over the top. Ed certainly knows a bit more about this world than myself.

Ed, CeBIT has always been international, especially when you look at the exhibitors. You will find many companies who do not have a german presence offering their goods. However, the majority of the visitors are german, especially at the weekend. ;-)

Hannover does not have nearly enough hotel rooms to accommodate all visitors which leads to a very special situation: The majority of visitors stay at private homes, which is quite a gamble.

You would probably be very concerned about how small the presence of "your" product is at this fair. What used to be a several thousand sq feet two story booth is now a couple of PCs.

Volker Weber, 2005-03-14

Yep, my deepest regrets. Since i don't know Ed, shit happened.

My friend Jim Louderback recently got back from his first trip to CeBIT. At least one thing mystified him:

Anybody know what this is?

Esther Schindler, 2005-03-18

I think it's a 'Trafohaus' and please don't ask me for an English translation. ;-)
