Some issues with Mac OS X v10.3.9

by Ken Porter

According to an article on the Apple website:

After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some systems may have issues with Java applications and Java-enabled websites when using Safari. Safari may unexpectedly quit, and standalone Java applications may unexpectedly quit or not launch.

If you are experiencing problems with your system and want to know how to fix it, or want to test to see if yours is affected, there is more information on the Apple website here.

Mine says:

java version "1.4.2_05"Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

Looks like I am unaffected.

Volker, thank you for the link! I had the problem with the "Segmentation fault" with my Zoe Server. First, I tried the Java Update (first link on the Apple page, about 26MB) which didn't work: the install procedure didn't allow a downgrade. The Security Update 2005-002 (second link, 16MB) worked for me. The Apple guys apparently are not sure about their hotfix either: "To resolve the issue, reinstall one or both of the following software updates."

If you're affected try the second link first, that might save you some download time.

This should read:

Ken, thank you for the link!

Ooops, didn't see that Ken Porter posted this one. So here it is: Thanks a lot for the link Ken. You saved my day ;-)

Glad it helped! :-)

I have:

java version "1.4.2_05"

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

too, but it does effect me. Not a single java related prog will open now.....

Ii have tried everything.... reinstall security update, deleting java update packages to reinstall java (which didnt work), fixed bindings, fixed permissions, refreshed nvram, fsck, still searching for an answer.... this is killing me because i am studying java at uni and have assignments due in 4 days..... trying to download java updates of the apple dev site..... arrrgh

For the record, I got this to work :P

I ripped out safari and java and reinstalled. I think the issue was an incompatible beta version of webkit on my old powerbook g4. I finished the assignment and completed my Degree, also purchased a swanky new macbook pro which has none of these issues..
