Oh dear, do we all have to be so cynical, this early??

Nick Daisley, 2005-07-29

Nick, habits so carefully nursed and nourished throughout the years by a certin vendor die really, really hard. In other words: Why expect less than what we already have ;-)

LOL -- IBM owns a Vista trademark, too :)

Enjoyed that, and have enjoyed passing along to some of the MS die hards I know!

And in breaking news...

Many a true word is spoken in jest.

My favourite is 'Vaunted Imminent Scoble Touted Application'.
I don't remember the attribution, but I'm certain Robert will provide that for us ;-).

WTF, whats wrong with Vista

dan knight, 2007-01-31

Well, Dan, lets start with DRM. I dont like the idea of some script kiddie in Redmond or Bangalore deciding what content I'm allowed to purchase and watch on my laptop. Thats beyond stupid.

And then lets go onto performance - on my XPS gen-2 ¢4000 laptop - top of the line - it goes significantly slower than XP. Its a nice interface - granted - and has some interesting effects. Effects that SUSE desktop 9/10 had years ago. Effects that Mac OS/x had two years ago. In this area, its catch-up.

Lets look at the broken "I can repair myself stuff" (on my blog), the lack of hardware drivers (which may or may not be MS's fault) and the continuous "Your about to do something - are you sure" security prompts, which innures the user to actually reading security points.

I could touch on the new innovative networking and TCP stack, which so far hasnt bit me on the ass - and is just immensely infuriating..

In the plus side - for the first time since I purchased this laptop, it appears to sleep properly, and doesnt switch itself on whilst in my backpack. XP did that a *lot*.

So. Lots and lots of MS hype, and what do we get ? A slightly slower, flashier windows XP.

After running Vista for a month, I'm underwhelmed.

Worth the $10b or so MS spent on it ? Worth the five year wait ? Worth the vista-reset ? Worth paying twice the US dollar price in the UK ? Worth me spending three days and eight re-installs getting it to work reliably ? (See the "I can repair myself" stuff from my blog..)

Ah. No.

My next laptop will be a mac.
