BTW: Beside the portal page, Yahoo also has a (useful) search page: http://search.yahoo.com/
And I think this is a little comparing apples and oranges. Yahoo's search page is a lot simpler than the main portal. Obviously, it supports entirely different purposes.
Maybe it would have been fair to compare news.google.com with www.yahoo.com and www.google.com with search.yahoo.com.
But then the difference wouldn't have been so striking, of course.
That is not necessarily the case. Yahoo always tried to be a portal, while Google stayed simple. Now Yahoo has copied Google, and Google tries to build more elaborate stuff. It remains to be seen whether that works.
