Notes 7 and mobile devices

by Volker Weber

Which software do you use to sync your mobile device PIM data with your Notes address book and calendar?

A friend just asked me for a recommendation to sync his Nokia 9300. As it turns out, the software Nokia supplies only works with Notes 5 and 6, but not with 7. What do you use? Please name the software, your Notes version and the device you are using.

QTEK 8310 (Windows Mobile 5.0 device) with ActiveSync 4.1 and Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook 7.1. So basically my device is syncing with Outlook which in turns syncs with Domino in the back-end.

My SonyEricsson synchs with Notes 7 with the default software.

I once had the trouble, that the software didn't want Notes 6 when it officially supported Notes 5 only. At the time, that could be fixed by adding registry entries which looked like Notes 5 was installed but pointed to the Notes 6 directories. After all, the APIs are backward compatible, so there shouldn't be any troubles.

Ragnar Schierholz, 2006-04-05

Erwin, this is a very good idea. Install DAMO as a MAPI provider and then use all the third party tools that connect to Outlook. Should have thought of that.

Volker Weber, 2006-04-05

I am using mNotes from Commontime for my Windows Mobile 5 device (Pocket Loox). This works fine and should also support Palm and Symbian devices.

I have no problem with the Nokia software for my N70 and sync with Notes 7. Is there really a difference between the versions for different phones?

Werner Krause, 2006-04-05

I use the Nokia supplied software for the 9300 on Notes 7.

It's not designed for it, but it works.

Send your friend to me if he needs some help getting it going, although my hack only works for Windows.

I'm using the normal SE Software to sync my P910i with my Notes 7.0.1 Client.
I also use the latest BB DesktopManager to sync my BB7290.
Both works without problems ^^

Also using mNotes from Commontime for my Windows Mobile 5 device (Dell Axim) with Notes 7 (and former Notes 6) and I am very satisfied not only with the product itself but also with the support.

Symbian version also available but according to the web site only supports Sony Ericsson P900/P910 phones.

Treo 650, Onebridge, Notes 6

Onebridge is server-based and supports a push-like mail delivery - not really usable though since it drains the battery very quickly. A plus for Onebridge is that it runs on a variety of different devices (PalmOS, Symbian, Windows Mobile). Useful for a corporate environment.

The synchronisation is ok. A major disadvantage is that Onebridge has its own mail client called MailPlus. it does not integrate with the Treo at all, and regularly crashes when opening an email.

@ M. Foellmer
BB with encrypted Notesmail via Web Access Template, could that be the way to have a BB with encryption activated within Domino?
We had decided against BBs once, because theire was no encryption/decryption solution for internal mailings.

If you are coming to us today, I will ask you about this.

Anyone have any experience with LN 7.0.1 sync. to Motorola phones (Razr or Pebl)?

Franz, Michael: Does mNotes synch with the standard applications of the Symbian devices? The screen shots look like they have their own applications for the PIM data. I'm particularly interested in the addressbook and the calendar. I guess for the email I could live with a custom/proprietary app.

James Bliss, 2006-04-07

It would already help a lot if Notes would be able to subscribe to HTTP/HTTPS iCalendar objects. DAV support for publishing would also be nice.

Simple publishing and subscription functionality like in iCal would suffice. No bells and whistles. But I suspect that this would not yield enough new context menu entries and other unusable "we-implement-usability-later" features for Lotus to implement. *sigh*

SyncML with a PIM... syncing a mobile handset... not really needed.

Syncing my Mac with my office calendaring: priceless.

I have the Nokia 6682. PC Suite 6.70.22 would not work with Notes 6.5.4. Help Desk told me that the software would work with 6.5 but not beyond. I don't even get past the first page of the sync script. Upgraded to Notes 7 last week, so now I am really out of the loop. Running XP Pro, SP2 English. Any ideas on an upgrade or a work around would be helpful.

The Nokia software looks for this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\6.0

With Notes 7, this key reads HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\7.0. Export it in text format, replace 7.0 with with 6.0 and reimport. You should now have two keys: One for Notes, one for Nokia.

I am unable to sync my contacts on my ericsson p910 with Notes 7. the only option i have in pc suite is to synchronise with windows address book, which i don't use. I am running the bbconnect client on the p910,

Dionne Sinclair, 2006-04-14

Hi,

I was using the FREE synch software which came with my Sony Ericsson P910 and Lotus Notes 6 and this has always worked fine.

Since I upgraded to Lotus Notes 7 the synch doesn't work. I called Sony Ericsson and they told me that they will probably include LN 7 compatibility in their next version of the software but do not know when this will happen.

I can't believe that a company like Sony Ericsson doesn't folow Lotus Notes development step by step and updates its software accordingly. There must be thousands of people on the globe today that can't synch their agendas etc (for free) anymore.

If anyone knows of a solution, please let me know through my contact form at my blog.

Thanks.

I have been using mNotes since getting an i-Mate Jasjar at the beginning of the year (Win Mobile 5.0). It works very well, and is one of the best Notes sync packages I've come across (I've been a Notes user for 8 years), especially regarding support for the various Notes calendar repeat patterns. I've used it extensively on both Notes 6 and Notes 7.

I am trying to use Domino 7 Web Access with Nokia Communicator's Opera browser but receiving a message that "Domino Web Access has not been certified with this browser" Any ideas how to make it work.. Alper Utku

Alper Utku, 2006-04-27

You can get a P910i to sync with Notes 7 as follows:

(Based on advice from: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd6forum.nsf/DateAllThreadedweb/95629f3e193f009b85256cc6005aa8d8?OpenDocument)

Create a text file (e.g. with notepad) with the following content:

------ All text below this line ------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\5.0]
"DataPath"="C:\\notes\\data"
"Description"="Lotus Notes"
"MultiUser"=dword:00000000
"Name"="Notes.exe"
"Path"="C:\\notes"
------ All text above this line ------

Replace C:\\notes with wherever you have installed notes for both "Datapath" and "Path".

Save the file as (for example) noteshack.reg

Double click the file and add to the registry (i.e. click on OK)

That's it. Evil hack but it works. Tested on Windows XP, SP2, EN with Notes 7 EN.

Alan Broady, 2006-05-18

Alan's hack for getting things to work with Notes 5.0 works with getting Notes 7.0 recognised by Nokia PC Suite as Notes 6, which I've done for my 6600.

My files looks like the following:

------ All text below this line goes in notes6.reg ------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\6.0]
"DataPath"="C:\\notes\\data"
"Description"="Lotus Notes"
"MultiUser"=dword:00000000
"Name"="Notes.exe"
"Path"="C:\\notes"
"Comment"="Hack to make Notes 7 look like Notes 6 for some applications"
------ All text above this line ------

Notes that I've added a comment into the registry so that I can see that it was a manual change if something goes wrong :)

ALSO... Any users of PC Suite finding they want to reset the synchronisation so that it inspects all documents at both ends should go and delete the Synch.ctrl files from the tasks folders within your Nokia data folder, in my case C:\Nokia\Nokia 6600\tasks
You'll find folders for the configured tasks (usually 2) in which there is Synch.ctrl and SynchLog.txt.
Have a look at the .txt file to see whether it's Contacts or Calendar/Todo, and delete the .ctrl one for the one you've got out of sync.

I found this very useful when I wanted to initialise a new names.nsf entirely from the phone.

Neale Upstone, 2006-07-27

Hi - done the registry for p910i for Notes 5.0 when using Notes 7.0 but during synching I get a warning message and then it disappears - next another message comes on to indicate that Sync failed - what could be the problem

Kelvin Lim, 2006-08-10

Hey - i finally figured it out - in the settings field - you have to point to your local notes path where notes.exe is located - then you have to key in your personal nsf file description - and then voila - my P910i calendar is synced!!

Kelvin Lim, 2006-08-10

Problem surfaced - now some calendar entries can be synced some cant - for those which cannot be synced, i've opened them individually and resaved (means a conflict entry which cannot be helped) and then resynced - now it can be shown over in the phone - any remedies for this?

Kelvin Lim, 2006-08-14

Just to come back on my previous comment....and sorry for any problems :-}

If you use Notes 5.0 as the hack then it doesn't seem to work for repeating meetings which is rather annoying. Just use Notes 6.0 to correct for this. So the variation on my hack from Neale should be used instead.

Alan Broady, 2006-11-20

I have just purchased a SE m600i phone and running PC Suite 1.2.15.

I cannot get it to sync with Lotus Notes 6.5.4 - the PC Suite software does not allow me to select LN through the pull down menu for synchronisation settings.

Tried looking into the registry but not sure what to look for and what to do next. Any advice would be most helpful.

Peter S, 2007-01-16

I am not able to sync my M600i with Lotus Notes 8 (Beta) with the std applications supplied with the phone. Can anyone help?

Atul Jain, 2007-03-13

I used the Lotus Notes 6.0 (emulating 7.0) hack above and it worked to allow my W880i phone to sync calendar without issues.

Jason Farrow, 2007-05-21

I called Sony Ericsson, and they told me that they will only be able to sync Lotus 8 once new products have been launched by them. I believe that Sony must get thier socks pulled up, or any other cell phone manufacturing company. We are not requesting for new products but upgrading of thier software.

The reason why we buy these expensive phones, if for business reasons. We are avoiding carrying around a lot of paper like paper diaries etc.

The only solution that I have so far, is to down grade to Lotus 7. If there is anyone who has a solution, please let us know.

Obakeng Gaopalangwe, 2007-10-23

Thanks for the tip regarding Lotus Notes and the reg hack. Confirm it works with M600i and Lotus Notes 7. It would not show before in my sync manager and now it works very well. Just a tip for people using a local replication of their mail / contacts / calender. When you select "Lotus Notes v5//v6/v7" from the drop down menu, select "properties" beside it and then uncheck "use default server and database file". In the "Select Server" field enter "Local" and in the "Select database file to sync with" enter location of your names.nsf or your mail.nsf file.

Hope it helps some. I am also using PC Suite v1.3.22
Cheers
