Three is enough

by Volker Weber

I have three messages like this today:

xzy started a Friend Map on Frappr so your friends can all see each other on a map. Come put yourself on the map!

To see xyz's Friend Map, click below or paste the url into a browser:

Can I continue to be your friend without adding myself to your map? Here is the problem: This does not scale. I don't want to add myself to brazillions of maps. My whereabouts are well known. Just check out plazes.com. If you need a mash-up of where your friends are, start right there. If you ask, I can send you an invite which earns me worthless karma point. The handy plazes launcher for Windows even lets you set mood messages on Skype so that I can remove you from my buddylist. Latest casualties: John H. and Bill B. Boys, I can look you up on plazes if I need to know whether you are currently in your living room or on the loo crappr.

[Ben Rose seems to have a similar problem]

Odd. I got two skype messages from you yesterday stating that you were at "Wowe's flying circus"...

That was yesterday. :-) I said "latest casualties".

"if I need to know whether you are currently in your living room or on the loo..."

ITYM "... or on the crappr...."

Sorry. Couldn't help it. Must be the Tourettes.

"The handy plazes launcher for Windows even lets you set mood messages on Skype so that I can remove you from my buddylist."

Does this now answer the question asked over here?

Wow ... so your deciding what software I can or can not use for the pleasure of being on your being on your IM friend list? Wow ... thanks for the censorship. I think I will choose what I do and do not do on my computer Thanks.

Censorship?

Volker Weber, 2006-05-09

Yep ... you are telling me that if I communicate a cetrain way, you will not interact with me. Yes, its not stopping others from communicating with me, but its still supression of ideas and thoughts. It is in your full right, but it sends a clear message to me.

John Head, 2006-05-09

What do you call this? ... I call that censorship. Planning on blocking my comments too? Deleting them as well? Come on ...

John Head, 2006-05-09

John, this posting is about Frappr. I have no idea what you are talking about.

Update: Ah, it looks like you are being used as a happy troll. Sorry to see that. In any case, check out my FAQ and the link to Wikipedia to learn what censorship is.

John, I believe you've made a wrong assumption here. I never had the feeling that Volker is telling you (or anyone else for that matter) what they have to do on their computer. He's just saying what you should do to stay listed on *his* computer. Which is quite fair considering that he could just remove you without giving any reason at all (well, it's his computer and his buddy list, isn't it?). As for the mentioned "suppression of ideas and thoughts": Nobody said you couldn't use email to send them, right? In a way the problem is quite similar to what I do on the good old phone: you don't present a calling party ID, I won't answer. You present a caller ID I don't like, I won't answer, too. I'd maybe read email from those I won't take on the phone but don't take that for granted either. So where's the difference except that you know you're no longer on the buddy list? Which is, if I may add, not a real problem because you can send Skype messages to any person you like. It doesn't matter at all whether you're on their buddy list or not (in most cases, that is).
