Explorer Destroyer - A silly idea

by Volker Weber

Since Simon just mentioned it , I think Explorer Destroyer (Switch to Firefox, Make money from Adsense Referral) is a pretty silly idea. What do you gain by alienating your visitors? $1 per switcher? There must be better ways to make money. I know that Simon does not think about the money, but I don't think it works if you tell your visitors they are being inconvenienced since they are using "the wrong browser". It certainly does not work for me.

I had a gentle reminder in the sidebar until I found it too annoying. This is the top of the statistic I am seeing right now:

Let's not make rash judgements. We haven't seen your stats for operating systems yet. ;-)

I see the opposite in my statistics, so I clearly don't have smart readers...

I'm giving it a try for a while to see what the reaction is. I have the script set to simply display a yellow bar at the top of the home page (not on other pages) for IE users, rather than the more extreme options the Explorer Destroyer site suggests (which I do think are daft). I regard this as targetted advertising; I'll publish results in a month or so.

Companies or other service providers who think they really can change their customers/users are overestimating their power in 98% of the cases (don't pin me down on the number, that's an estimate... but I would take almost any bet that the real number is somewhat like that). Few products really changed the way people behave and even fewer did in a time frame short enough for the inventor to make real profit.

21.9% IE? That sounds almost like rock bottom as there are many users who can't chose their browser, like in a many corporate environments.

You seem to have converted all the convertables ;-)
Good job! ;-)
