NeoOffice has arrived at vowe's magic flying circus

NeoOffice

For the first time ever, I have a version of OpenOffice on the Mac, that I could live with. NeoOffice 2.0 Aqua looks and behaves like a Mac application. So far I have been happy with Microsoft Word, but I will try and work with NeoOffice Writer for now. Since I don't want to end up with documents that none of my other editors can read, I will not be using the standard Open Document file formats though. This may change when others request I use them.

Good choice, looks really good, I replaced my MS office for Mac with NeoOffice, because this is only Universal binary code.

Cheers Marco

Wie war das noch mit der doppelten Verneinung?

LOL. Das war ja dreifache Verneinung. :-)

I am using NeoOffice for more then a year now and it works absolutely fine. The only obviously non-mac style features are the dialog-boxes for saving and opening files. They look and behave strangely Windows-like. The other quirk one has to live with is the very slow launch of NeoOffice.

I like the style and format features of OpenOffice/NeoOffice, which are much neater and easier to use then the thousands of sub-menus in MS Office. I love the PDF saving, which is very convenient and fast compared to competitors.

Ah, great, I have been waiting for this release for quite a while. I have to admit, though, that I keep switching between NeoOffice and Openoffice. NeoOffice seems to be slower on my 12" Powerbook compared to Openoffice, but on the other hand I don't need to start the Xserver (which I only need for OO and the GIMP).

As for file formats, I am fine by creating every document in the standard Openoffice format and save them as *.doc or *.pdf whenever needed.

Moritz, the beta uses OS X dialog boxes. Which not only looks nicer but also solved my biggest problem with Neo/OpenOffice: Neither of those was able to open files stored on my central server. With NeoOffice 2 beta, this finally works as expected. Also, the time needed to launch NeoOffice isn't really a problem on my MacBook. On the iBook on the other hand, the latest Alpha I've been using still takes bloody ages to launch ;)

Ahem, Volker, I guess a request for using ODF here doesn't count, huh? Since I am keen on experiences with the ODF, I thought I might give it a try... ;-)
