What would I do without spam filters?
by Volker Weber
I am currently receiving 400 more than a thousand spam messages a day. And Google Mail does a pretty good job of catching them. I only had 16 false negatives and zero false positives today. My Collax Business Server was even better. Only one false negative and zero false positives. At least so I hope. ;-)
If you look at some of the subjects, it isn't that hard to figure out the spam. Yes, they are all from one day only:

I have to say, using POSTINI now and of 800+ per day that come in, I get between 1 and 10 false negatives (spam that gets in) -- almost all of which are 'pump-n-dump' which are the hardest to spot. I get so few false positives that I no longer check on a regular basis.
Postini says, approximately, "It's not just you ..."
Quote: "In the past 60 days, the market has experienced an unprecedented increase in spam, phishing, virus attacks, and fraud on the Internet. Based on past trends, we expect spam volumes to remain elevated or continue to climb through the end of the year."
I have also recently added Postini as the first line of defense, and the combination of it and spamJam has reduced my spam to an average of 1.5 false negatives per weekday (absolutely none on the weekends so far). Postini has had 4 false positives - if you can call newsletters that - in as many weeks. spamJam has had a few false positives, but based on the configuration it is more likely to now. On average, Postini catches 400 per day, leaving only 25-30 for spamJam to catch.
A very nice side benefit, my BlackBerry 8700 battery lasts a lot longer as it doesn't vibrate nearly as much!
The only thing I'd really love to see Postini accommodate is whitelisted text body - for instance anything and everything that says QuickPlace, AnyPlace, Domino, and a few other words should never be left out.
Unless of course it's from salesplace.com...hmmm maybe better think about that wish again.
