Site news: Polls

by Volker Weber

Polls have been on my todo list for quite some time. Today I finally nailed it. Look in the right hand sidebar and find a new feature:

vowe dot net poll

Vote and we will see whether this is going to be a permanent feature.

Update: If you have any interesting questions, let me know. And no, I am not going to make friends by asking who the most annoying Notes blogger is. :-)

Update: In case you are missing votes, I removed the test data and the ballot stuffing.

Sehr hübsch implementiert. Alleine oder mit ein bisschen Hilfe?

Yves Luther, 2007-01-02

Mit ganz dicker Hilfe. Ohne Malte hätte ich das nicht so hingekriegt.

Volker Weber, 2007-01-03

Sehr cool gelöst. Glückwunsch.

Benjamin Stein, 2007-01-03

Very nice! Been wanting to do this for a while... you may just get me motivated!

Chris Toohey, 2007-01-03

Yeah, it's nice and Ajaxy and different. But I think the vote shouldn't be submitted when a radio button is activated. No way to change your selection before submitting. If you don't want a button always visible, why not make a "submit" button visible only when a radio button is selected?

Joerg Michael, 2007-01-03

With the amazing cross section of readers and topics that you have, I think that this is an excellent idea.

Gregg Eldred, 2007-01-03

I like it. What component are you using to do the polls, or is it something you wrote yourself?

Alan Lepofsky, 2007-01-03

Alan, I would have loved to use a plugin. Wordpress is where the action is, and there is a wonderful plugin called Democracy. It provides exactly what I needed. Since I had to cobble something together for my site I re-used a lot of code from dhtmlgoodies.com, which in turn uses the Simple AJAX Code-Kit (SACK).

Volker Weber, 2007-01-03

Jörg, I am trying to make this as unobtrusive as possible. Why would I need to use two clicks, when one already does the deal?

Volker Weber, 2007-01-03

From a UI perspective, I feel it's a good thing to give the user the option of un-doing mistakes. But then, this is a poll and not the UI to launch an ICBM.

Joerg Michael, 2007-01-03

I like the single click :o)

I too adapted the poll code at dhtmlgoodies for a web application some time back. It's very good stuff, and pretty flexible: for example, currently Domino is providing the XML feed required by my poll to render results, but of course, this is easily switched to whatever back-end you want to use.

Ben Poole, 2007-01-03

I am seeing three bars for each choice - a short one, the actual result with the %-age and another short one. Browser is Firefox 2.0.0.1 if that helps...
(And I don't see any bards in MS IE V6, but that is probably due to our security settings at work)

John Keys, 2007-01-03

cool presented.

Next project "AROC": Automatic recognition of commenter (so you have not to type your full name, email address and URL over and over again ... Some sort of vowe identity management (VIM).

Cem Basman, 2007-01-03

I'm seeing the same triple bar that john is; using FF 2.0.0.1.

As far as using radio buttons goes, it doesn't feel right to me to use then in this context. I get that you don't want or particularly need another submit button, but I didn't expect clicking on a radio button to submit my result. It would be better if it was clear that a single click was going to submit the vote, probably by using a different graphic for the buttons.

Kerr Rainey, 2007-01-03

Hurm...

Vowe are you tweeking the code? Triple bar per answer is no longer there. Maybe it's only a problem after answering the question and that it's fine after a refresh?

Kerr Rainey, 2007-01-03

Now I don't see anything except a permanent message "Getting poll results. Please wait... ".

BTW: I would also like to see a submit button - I was a bit taken by surprise that the vote was registered as soon as I selected a radio button.

John Keys, 2007-01-03

@Cem: LOL. VIM. And if you wait for a while you can get the Vowe Identity Manager Express.

Here we go again...

.::AleX::.

Alex Hernandez, 2007-01-03

Cem, the Identity Manager Services Express (IMSE) is already deployed. Make sure that your browser accepts cookies from vowe.net and executes Javascript. :-)

Alex, IMSE is only available as a service.

John, I really wonder what's going wrong at your end. The poll is AJAXed and as such runs on the client. There are many possible problems with that setup. This is again an advantage of the Democracy plugin - it also runs without Javascript.

Kerr, yes, I have been tweaking the code. At 1024 px with small chars it was too wide.

Volker Weber, 2007-01-03

Re. what's going on at my end - it is running on a fairly locked down PC, security-wise. The problem of working for a financial institution... The bars looked OK again at the end of the day, so I guess it was a combination of your tweeking and our security setup.

John Keys, 2007-01-03

I have a question candidate for you: Is Holtzbrinck's studiVZ buy a good deal?

Thomas Cloer, 2007-01-03

It would be nice if we could just display the results, since I have many browsers and visit too often ;-)

Richard van Geilswyk, 2007-01-03

Richard, yes, that would be very easy today. On the other hand, I don't want to encourage lurkers or people who have to see what they should vote for. ;-)

Volker Weber, 2007-01-03

if "I could not care less" then i would not bother to click a radio button . ..

john mill, 2007-01-03

Danke, hab ich schon drauf gewartet. :-) Super!

Cheers Marco
