Having fun with Sametime

by Volker Weber

After I tested Sametime 7.5.1 and found a couple of unresolved problems, I was asked whether I had done a clean install. I was not sure, so I removed all traces of Sametime, did a fresh install and ever since I have been unable to login to the demo server with Sametime Connect.

I have tested my credentials in the Meeting Center and I have no login problems there.

So it looks like I know my username and password, but the demo server would not let me in with Sametime Connect. The only idea I have is that somebody at IBM registered a "Weber Volker" for an online meeting tomorrow. Maybe this is confusing the server?

Anyway, in preparation for the meeting tomorrow, I tried to attend the Test Meeting. And this does not look too good either:

Maybe I can ask IBM to just use WebEx? Otherwise it looks like I am going to see an audio demo tomorrow.

Update: The Sametime server was down. It was an audio demo. In an open conference call. With more IBMers than press in attendance. Which was sheer luck for IBM.

30April2007: Upgrade plans: We plan to upgrade this server to Sametime 7.5.1 the evening of Wednesday, May 2. http://stdemo3.dfw.ibm.com/welcome.nsf?open - may be this is the reason why you cannot connect.

Thanks, Egor, but that is not the problem. IBM is rebooting the server right now and I will check again in a few.

well, there are teams at IBM who use WebEx and other tools for web conferencing - and there are some teams that eat their own dogfood, but rent it from a partner :-)

IBM rebooted the server. Now I can login again with Sametime Connect. Uh oh, I would not want to do a root cause analysis on that one.

Volker,

Were you able to get 7.5.1 working on Firefox on OS X? I thought only Safari was supported.

Bruce Elgort, 2007-05-03

I don't know if it makes it better or worse, but they didn't actually reboot the server. Not sure why your client decided to start working again at that particular moment. (Like I said... not sure if it makes it better or worse).

The server has now been upgraded to Sametime 7.5.1, though - hopefully you'll have smooth sailing tomorrow.

I've similar problem with my account (IBM ID) on the extst.ibm.com servers. No problems to login on the webbrowser, no problem with the Java Connect Client from the site. But the Sametime Connect Client (W32) gives me the message:
"User [my IBM ID] failed to log into extst.ibm.com

Reason:
Unable to access Sametime due to incorrect logon. Please try again or contact your system administrator."

Wolfgang Fey, 2007-05-03

@Bruce,’ used both Safari and Firefox on OS X with Sametime for meetings.

The issue I note with Firefox is that the meeting kicks off with a blank screen that doesn’t do much. If you view source, there is a frame in there, with a familar Domino URL. Copy and paste that into the address bar, and the meeting then works.

Bizarre.

Hi Volker,

For what's it's worth to you... you can use Yugma Web Conferencing as a back up solution (http://www.yugma.com ). The free version allows you to invite up to 10 attendees. Very secure, safe, reliable, and easy(!). In fact we partnered with IBM early last year when the alpha and beta version went under a different "under the radar" brand. Premium versions are are priced to save you alot (80%). Mac, Windows and Linux compatible. It's worth a try.

Best regards,
