Google Maps Mobile with GPS support
by Volker Weber
Google has released version 1.5.1 of Google Maps Mobile for Blackberry, now with GPS support. You can either use a Bluetooth GPS, or the internal GPS receiver of your device, as shown here with a BlackBerry 8800.
Update: There is also a version for Windows Mobile with GPS support. The Palm version does not seem to support a GPS, neither does the Symbian version.
Point your mobile browser to http://www.google.com/gmm to install it.

Downloaded and working perfectly here. Thanks.
So much better than the built in 8800 maps feature.
Is there GPS software for the 8800 that does NOT use the internet APN, i.e. can be pre-installed or uses the BB APN?
(Of course I have the Freenet flat rate in mind...)
Blackberry Maps should do that (APN: blackberry.net). And maybe Google does as well. It has not asked me for permission to access the carrier internet. And security is set to "prompt". Therefore I assume that it uses blackberry.net.
Be careful though. BB Maps is vector based, GMaps uses bitmaps. Potentially a LOT more data.
i get v. 1.05(1) from my SE w950i... will test that tomorrow
thank you works.
cheers marco
Unfortunately GPS support is only available for Google Maps on Windows Mobile, no Series60 et al.
Does anyone know if you can upload the gps coordinates from the 8800 to track locations?
Has anyone tested this version on a Nokia E61 yet? On mine, the key "3" does not work, even though you need it for forwarding to the next waypoint of a route description (its just in Google Maps, all other applications are working fine).
Problem solved, user error ;-)
