Collaborative online mind mapping

by Volker Weber

Last week Andreas sent me a link to MindMeister, which lets you create and edit mind maps online. The service imports from FreeMind and MindManager.

There is one free version and a paid version for 50 US$ a year. Check out the differences here. The most important one seems to me that only the paid version exports your maps to FreeMind and MindManager.

Is this in any way related to www.mind42.com, which is in open beta (and so following the web 2.0 guide). Mind42 is also an collaborative mind mapping service, found it through a reference in Ajaxian, but i didn't test it.

MindMeister is not related to Mind 42. A whole bunch of these Web 2.0 mind mapping and concept mapping products has come on line recently. Apart from the two mentioned above, there are these:

mindomo.com
bubble-mind.com
mapul.com
bubbl.us
kayuda.com
comapping.com
webofweb.net is the oldest web-based one I know of that's still surviving (mayomi came first but is dead)

Some of these are still in public Beta.

There are some other web-based ones that are expensive, and some that do diagrams and can draw mind maps but are not designed to do so.
