Windows Genuine Disadvantage

Why is Microsoft trying to sneak this in as an important update?

I have no idea, but they deploy IE7 the same way...
You can't argue that Apple is better in any way. There is no technical reason for the 6th generation iPods' additional checksum that recently broke interoperability with third party apps.
Nobody said Apple would be much better in this regard. I guess the "important" rating is mostly from the vendors' point of view. They think this update is important to ensure their revenue stream...
Eh... let me guess... because they can...?
You can't argue that Apple is better in any way.
I don't.
Because it is an important update. For Microsoft at least.
Nobody knows ... ;-)
Btw: What theme are you using?
looks like the good ol' Zune theme ;)

Well, they don't tell you for whom this update is important... Let's assume it's not the customer.
I don't support the idea of WGA, DRM, etc. but I can understand Microsoft's point of view. They are producing and selling buggy crappy some kind of software. They want money from their users. And they want users who didn't pay for their Windows version to (finally) pay for it because they are so irritated or annoyed from those "your Windows version seems not to be genuine" messages. That won't make the hard-core nerd buy a legal copy for his/her Windows installation but will work at least for some other users.
At least Microsoft finally provides a tool that lets you easily change your XP's registration key without messing with the Windows registry. Works also for the not-so-savvy Windows users who got their XP version "from a friend" a long time ago.
The market for "brand-new never opened Windows OEM versions" on a certain auction platform's website seems to be exploding but I doubt Microsoft is earning any additional profit with that.
I don't.
Yep. I was just annoyed about Apple today, so I wanted to mention it, anyway... :-)
The theme looks like Black Royal.
.::AleX::.
They've been doing it for a long time. WGA seems to update with some frequency. To be honest, I don't mind WGA so much. DRM, while nearly always bad for the customer, is somewhat less bad when it comes to things like an operating system that isn't really designed for moving or sharing. I'm not sure WGA is such a great implementation, but I can at least understand the purpose. Now, purchased media on the other hand, is a very different story.
If I were the type to speculate wildly I would wonder whether Microsoft decided to remove the kill switch from XP to see what kind of impact it might have on Vista and Server 2008. :-)
Same as with IE7 you only have to tick the 'Don't notify me....' box often enough (sumfing like 15-20 times) to make it stop annoying you.
Perseverance pays off some times. :)
Thomas, the theme is called Zune, and is based on Black Royal.
