Google has just released translation bots for Google Talk. Add them to your buddylist if you need a translator or add them to a group chat. How is this for a pocket translator with Google Talk for BlackBerry?

That reminds me of Eliza. In a way (and then again not at all) a multilanguage version.

On a different note, seeing gurkensalat made me laugh. German is such a peculiar language. I love the way you just shove words together to make a new one. :-) I mean that sincerely, I wish English weren't so addicted to spacing.
Einbahnstrasse was my nemesis in Munich because every street was named the same on the map we had! Myron loved the leberknodelsuppe and schweinshaxe. We quickly became adept at pulling the words apart into something we could recognize.
Au mann. Das haben wir vor 8 Jahren mit Sametime 1.5 schon mal gebaut. Lotus Translation Components und so.
Und für Eliza... die haben wir dann so integriert, daß man in jeder Sprache mit ihr sprechen konnte - Eliza kann nämlich nur Englisch.
Charles, Swedish has the same thing, you build new words by combining existing ones, without spaces. It is a pretty cool feature in a language.
My dad learned "Einbahnstrasse" and "Umleitung" pretty quick after marrying my mom (who was from Germany). He did not speak any German, but understood enough to read signs and understand mom when she went back into German when we were driving on vacation. After a few days she switched to "links" and "rechts" when giving directions. :-)
And f course he understood enough to order beer. :-)

Your iPhone turns into a pocket, multilingual, translator..

What I´m missing though is more german into other languages translations, such as de2es, de2it, de2ja.

Acht Jahre sind es nicht so ganz. Und es ist schon 'ne andere Sache, ob man erst einen WebSphere Translation Server lizenziert und von alphaWorks die Komponenten holt und in Sametime einbaut.
Oder eben einfach einen Bot in den kostenlosen Google-Talk-Service einlädt.
Da fällt mir ein: Kann man jetzt eigentlich alle IBMer von Google Talk und AIM aus über das Sametime Gateway erreichen? Das ist ja mittlerweile auch schon mehr als ein Jahr alt.
I vaguely remember something during a Lotusphere keynote a few years ago that showed translation during a Sametime chat. Does anyone else remember this? Was that the "Lotus Translation Components" spoken of above?
This would have been a few years ago; it has been a few years since I've been to a Sphere.

Ich vage erinnern, was während eines Lotusphere Hauptredner vor ein paar Jahren gezeigt, dass die Übersetzung, der während eines Sametime Chat. Hat jemand anderes daran erinnern? War, dass die "Lotus Translation Components" gesprochen, der vor?
Das wäre vor ein paar Jahren wurde es ein paar Jahre her, seit ich habe zu einer Kugel.

Volker, man kann bisher nicht nur alle IBMer nicht via Gateway erreichen, man hat auch schon seit über einem Jahr den Zugang via Collaborate Now für Sametime Clients dichtgemacht. Für ganz kurze Zeit gab es via STDEMO3 die Möglichkeit auch die Gateway-Funktionalität zu nutzen und IBMer, die sich auch dort anmelden, via Jabber Client zu erreichen. Auch das wurde innerhalb weniger Tage wieder dicht gemacht und bis heute nicht geöffnet. Vielleicht skaliert das eben doch nicht alles so wie versprochen :-(

vor 8 Jahren hatten wir den ersten translation B*t (der Begriff "gehört" jemand anderem) intern entwickelt - exakt die angegebene Funktionalität.
Das ganze dauerte 2 Tage...
Daraus wurde dann später ein Produkt, dessen Erfolg sicher begrenzt war... mit "free" war IBM damals noch ungeübt.

@Alex, CollaborateNow funktioniert mit ST Clients, solange die Portnummer angepaßt ist. STDemo3 ist eine andere Geschichte. Dort hilft es, dort über die Supportfunktion individuell nachzufragen...

I am still wondering what happened to the IBM gateway that was supposed to be deployed.
Gateway to which? There is an IBM sametime server to connect into the IBM "cloud" -- I chat with partners and customers on it all day long. There is also a gateway server for IBMers to connect to Google Talk, AOL, etc.
In the realm of your original posting, there is CodaChat which sounds like it does the real-time translation in a meaningful way.
Yes, I was talking about the gateway server to Google Talk. So what is the XMPP address for an IBM user? The same as the email address?

My horse likes it just fine. It's the sauerkraut that disagrees with him ;-)
IM+ for BlackBerry has implemented this feature a long time ago. Just turn on the Translator+ Network and chat with the bots which magically appear in your contact list.

The 1st bot (from Mr. Bastian Wieczorek) can translate text into different languages. The 2nd bot (from Mr. Basso) can translate text only into the pre-configured language. Both bots use the google translation engine to do the job.
