Shazam - an amazing application

Every DJ needs a very simple skill: imagine what he would like to play and then find it in his stack of records. For that he needs to know the artist and the title of the track he would like to play. Whatever is playing on a radio or in a bar, ask a DJ and he will most likely know artist, album and title. With Shazam you no longer need the DJ. Just let the iPhone to listen for a couple of seconds and Shazam tells you what is currently playing. It will also find that track for you in the iTunes store so that you can buy it right away (see where they are making money?) or on YouTube.

H'mmm ok if your a wedding or party DJ, but if your playing the cutting edge side of music, I doubt it will be of much use! So how many people take their nice spangly iPhone out clubbing to a hot n sweaty club then!!!

my SE w950i can do that too since 2006 (TrackID), at least it did. A few month ago, it began showing a message sometimes, telling me that this service is for SE phones only (which i obviously have). works/ed great though.

Shazam isn't new, only the iPhone version is...

I found the Shazam to be very precise.

Just curious: Who knows how it works?

Hm, interesting spin on the concept of cross-selling. Now they're cross-selling on something they haven't really sold...

Andy, I would assume that it's a sort of pattern matching algorithm. The phone records the music played and sends the recording or some meta-data about it to the service. The service can then try to identify the snippet by matching patterns against a database. This database would have to be very well designed and still quite huge, I would imagine.
