iPhone wins

Full access to all Sonos ZonePlayers, including Last.fm tag radio, with 'Love this track' and 'Ban this track' — this spells bad news for all other smartphones at vowe's magic flying circus. I'd rather have my Sonos remote in my shirt pocket ...

Any experiences concerning battery drain so far?

Stefan Domanske, 2008-10-28

No drain whatsoever. Remember, the music is not played through a controller. The controller communicates with the players over uPnP. It goes to sleep as usual and then reconnects when you wake it up. The ZonePlayers do their job without a controller active.

That IS extremely cool. Looking forward to updating my Sonos components and installing the iPhone app tonight. Love my Sonos, love my iPhone, now I need a stronger term to describe how I feel about combining them...

Am I correct in understanding the iPhone/iTouch controls the ZonPlayers directly and there is not need for a web app server running anywhere else ? aka, I could deploy nothing more than Sonos hardware and have an iPhone ? I think I am missing something (a wireless router, a PC, etc. ?)

Glen Salmon, 2008-10-28

One ZonePlayer has to be connected to your Internet router. And your iPhone needs to connect to Wi-Fi on the same subnet. So yes, one Internet router with Wi-Fi.

To play your own music, Sonos also needs access to an SMB share, with NAS being the obvious choice, but a PC or a Mac can also serve as storage.

The iPhone/iPod controller is a native app. It does not need a web server.

I'll take the E71 if you don't need it :)

I want a blackberry app.

Olaf Boerner, 2008-10-28

I'm lovin' it already. Sonos keeps getting better and better.

I'd take the storm ;-)

...and this is why the iPhone wins time and time again, it's the apps. As I sit here with my S60 smartphone, watching all this functionality pass me by, knowing that it'll never come to my platform, I can convince myself that I can easily live without;

a > 2Mpixel camera
MMS
turn-by-turn navigation
> 1 day battery life
a real (E90) keyboard
cut and paste (ha, ha - that old one!)

because not only will all the partner apps to those on my desktop mac be readily available, but all this other great stuff will be too - and at a price which blows away what I have been paying on the S60 and Blackberry platforms to date!

Going to have to give it a go....
