Use iTunes to buy MP3s from Amazon, avoiding tracks crippled with DRM

by Volker Weber

This is just great:

  1. Download and install Advantageous mp3. It is free of charge.
  2. Browse through the iTunes Store, just as usual. Or use iTunes Genius feature to find new music.
  3. When you find something you want, click on Get MP3 from Amazon in the iTunes Script Menu.
  4. Advantageous mp3 takes you to the artist's or album's Amazon MP3 site. You can buy the music DRM-free and in better quality.

Repeat after me: DRM is bad for the customer.

Shame the utility is crippled by being Mac only ;)

I guess it only works in the US, right?

Mariano Kamp, 2008-11-05

Yes.

Amazon MP3 Purchases are limited to U.S. customers.

But it's a start.

Volker Weber, 2008-11-05

Well, as soon as Amazon opens its MP3 store to the non-U.S. the tool will also be useful outside of the U.S. Technically, it already works everywhere, just it takes you to a store that chose not to do business with many of us.

Time to write a loveletter to Amazon :)

iTunes store was not built in a day. It takes a long time to negotiate licensing deals with the music "industry".

Volker Weber, 2008-11-05

vowe, do you know from reasonably reliable (in your assessment) source that Amazon is in such negotiations? My impression is that nothing is moving but Amazon seems to wait for maybe more stable success numbers. Admittedtly it's not based on specific information... hence my question.

Ragnar Schierholz, 2008-11-07

Yes.

Its about time. I can't say how much I hate DRM after my logic board broke down and all over sudden the on the new computer the music that worked flawlessly for years is not working since it was bought via an ex-GFs account (authorization prompt popping up for every second account). Needless to say that my current grilfriend is very upset.

I feel that the industry betrayed me: only because we paid for the songs back then I'm now in deep trouble. Oh, if we had only pirated all that stuff - then I would not have this mess now...
