Wired: Pandora Sees iPhone Gold in the Palm Pre

by Volker Weber

Pandora founder Tim Westergren thinks being broad isn’t necessarily the best strategy for development in the smartphone industry and that betting on a single (what he calls a "hero") platform could be the way to go. Hint: it's not a Blackberry or Google's Android.

"As a company we’re always thinking what’s the next iPhone? And that’s where we’re gonna put our resources. So we’ve come out and said, we’re gonna put a bet on Palm Pre," he said Tuesday on a panel called "The Smartphone Revolution" at the 2009 AlwaysOn OnMedia conference in New York.

Looking very much forward to playing with a Pre in about two weeks.

I'm really looking forward to playing with a Pre, too. If "iPhone killer" wouldn't be such a hackneyed word, I'd call it that from what I've seen so far. I'll have to wait a little longer than two weeks though. Volker, where will you get hold of one and what's your educated guess on an availability date in Germany?

Availability in Germany, actually in Europe, depends on the carriers. Some of the carriers have not made smart decisions last year, so they will continue to so, this time because of Angst.

Currently there is no GSM/UMTS/HSPA version. I expect to see one (prototype) in Barcelona. But whether that ever sees the light of day depends entirely on orders from the carriers. Palm is too stretched right now to go this alone.
