DIY: Make websites readable
by Volker Weber
You have to try Readability. It turns this:
into that with a click of a bookmark:
And it works even better with larger windows than I can show here. Highly recommended.

Irgendwie schon traurig, dass man sowas wirklich braucht inzwischen.
bin ich zu doof, oder klappt das nicht mit spiegel.de, heise.de etc.
nur einzelne blogposts funktionieren (prima)
It only works with some pages - and if the language is accepted.
I tried: http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20090306p2a00m0na007000c.html
which is in English and works as designed
The same page in Japanese:
http://mainichi.jp/select/wadai/heiwa/hibakusha/news/20090227ddp041040029000c.html
does not produce any valid result.
Same for other sites and pages.
So not really useful for me - IE7 and up can zoom the whole page out of the box. I did not find a plug-in for the Firefox based browsers - they only enlarge the font and not the page.
Samuel, it needs to understand the page structure. Easy for single articles, not so easy for complicated pages.
Bernd, I don't find it interesting because it zooms. What I like is that it removes all bad design and reduces the text to my settings.
Bernd, Firefox 3 zooms the whole page too: Ctrl-Mousewheel or Ctrl-+/-, Reset with Ctrl-0 (zero).
bernd / etal - The "No-Squint" Firefox plug-in remembers zoom settings on a site-by-site basis so if a blog or website is always too big or too small, you can just zoom in/out once nd the next time it will remember you preference. It also has a default zoom (which helps my old eyes on my high res / smal size thinkpad screen).
It does not remove content from the page but then again, I tried three pages with the "Readability" feature and it remove far too much - including the majority of the material.
Unfortunately it makes clean site designs MUCH worse - like vowe.net. Not really very useful overall, I think.
Thank you! I can finally read the Shell game on IE (@ work)!
i like this phone
Wow, impressive indeed! Thanks!
(Yes, no, it does not work for all sites. Pity, as it especially does not work on horrible-layout sites like www.telegraaf.nl)
