BlackBerry Messenger 5 is here

by Volker Weber

With BlackBerry® Messenger on your BlackBerry smartphone, your friends are only a message away. Ask a quick question, make plans with your group of friends, even share stories and pictures—all in real-time. Express yourself and stay in touch your way with BlackBerry Messenger.

This is the one piece of BlackBerry software I don't get. This is device to device IM, not person to person, the way it is meant to be.

Hi Volker,

Each IM technology is system to system not person to person in a technical way. Yes, its bound to the BB device - but how many people have a multi-user handheld device ? Do you share your iPhone or your pre ? My company and a lot of my friends are on blackberries so it's simply convenient to send text messages, audio and pics from the device. So, Messenger for me is a very important part in our bb infrastructure. Works like a charm and is nicely integrated in all the functions the specific device offers. Its bound to the bb platform - but other systems are bound to theirs as well. For me, it's a very usefull add-on.

In short - I get it. ;-).

Good for you. I would have to notify my contacts a couple of times a day that I just switched from this device to that device. No problem with Google Talk. It's always the same account, no matter which device.

It should also work whether you are mobile or whether you have sat down at a desk and your mobile is wedged in your pocket, and want to do all your communicating on a larger interface. Something jabber based that lets you be logged in at multiple locations/devices is more what I need. That or for meebo to come out with their app for the iPhone like they demoed at the iPhone OS 3.0 announcement.
