Nokia 3Q09 Quarterly Earnings

by Volker Weber

Interesting tidbit from the Nokia earnings.

Nokia’s share of the converged mobile device market was an estimated 35% in the third quarter 2009, at the same level as in the third quarter 2008 and down from 41% in the second quarter 2009. We shipped 4.5 million Nokia Nseries and 4.4 million Nokia Eseries devices during the third quarter 2009, down from the combined 9.3 million Nseries and Eseries devices we shipped in the second quarter 2009.

Market share for smartphones down from 41% to 35%. Nokia sold 8.9 million of those devices compared to 9.3 in the third quarter of 2008. That's down 5% in units. RIM just added 3.8 million net new subscribers in the quarter and shipped approximately 8.3 million devices. Apple numbers aren't out yet.

It is wrong only to count n- and e-series as smartphones. Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is one of the most succesful phones (maybe Nokias most successful smartphones), but it is ignored in this statistic.

Well, it's Nokia who counted the numbers, and who also named it 5800 instead of n-something.
