VW drops the New Beetle
by Volker Weber
Volkswagen just announced they are going to stop making the New Beetle. And here I was hoping they would follow up with the Ragster design prototype.
Well, the Polo just won Car of the Year 2010 and that is a much better design anyway:

I rented one of these in Atlanta and drove it for a few hundred miles. It wasn't really a very impressive car - not up to the standards of other German cars I've driven at all. It's major selling features was that it was interesting to look at, but that gets old after a while.
Now, if VW will produce for me a Toureg with that new high efficiency diesel engine I've been seeing in other VW's, I start getting really interested.
Volkswagen has a 3.0 litre V6 TDI, which does its best to move two tons of steel and plastic. If you want to improve the mileage of that monster, you just need a smaller and lighter car. ;-)

My days of driving really fast are pretty much over. I've cleaned up after too many of the results from people who all think they're F1 drivers and clearly are not.
The Toureg (at least here in the States) is a very nice mid-sized four wheel drive SUV. While not necessary in cities, out here in the woods where we get snow measured in feet and I need to get to the fire station during storms, a four wheel drive is quite practical. A very nice one, that uses VW's new Diesel tech to get good mileage without being a complete dog would be a very nice choice for me.
The diesel I mentioned is fine and has been available on the Tuareg ever since. Maybe not to you guys. We think the Tuareg is huge, and the Tiguan is midsized.
