Chrome features

nicely done. If they used something else instead of that mercury to feature omnibox would be more environmental responsible :-)

Hm, but what are the real innovative features here?

Speed - ok, maybe Chrome is faster than other browsers, but is that sustainable? Isn't that rather an arm's race?

Security - another arm's race... being secure has been claimed several times by other software products and so far, every single one has turned out to just take the race to the next level and with Chrome, I don't really see where they are substantially different. A check against a black list of known malicious websites has been around for along time. And, of course, vulnerabilities in Chrome have been identified and corrected just as in any other software product.

Themes - now that's really nothing new anymore, other browsers support that for a while also.

Stability - This is in fact something new in browsers, if it really works that would be helpful. While the concept isn't fundamentally new, Google Chrome is the first browser to attempt an implementation. I have experienced crashes though which took down the entire browser, so at least the implementation is not completely successful yet.

Omnibox - I have the same functionality in Firefox and my colleague who is an Opera evangelist does so too.

Icognito - Private modes have been around in other browsers as well for a while. Plus, Google's identification and tracing of users by the browsers ID (if not in private mode) and other means (such as their Google account) isn't really fostering web privacy. Google promoting web privacy really seems a bit odd to me.

Watch full video - Now what's s innovative about being able to watch video in a web browser? YouTube and its copy cats have gained enormous popularity with users in other browsers already.

New Tab - Having personalized start pages has been possible with various portals for a while. Integrating this functionality and extending its dynamics sure is nice, but Google actually made this available in other browsers as well using the Google Toolbar.

So I think after all, there are only a few things that remain originally innovative in Google Chrome.

I use it on the netbook. It's the fast option, by a wide margin. It uses the least screen estate. And it lets me create application separate from the browser. I am not using it on the Mac since I don't need any of the features there.

Chrome is training wheels for Chrome OS. And that is going to scream on machines even more nimble than netbooks.

the omnibox is underrated, widely. firefox and other platforms simply do not give you an easy interface (no, "write your own xml definition file" is not to be considered as easy in this case) and the Other Implementation[TM] working this fluently has yet to emerge.
