iPhone OS 3.1.3 brings back Internet Tethering to unlocked iPhones

by Volker Weber

Installing 3.1.3 is safe, if (a) you have an iPhone contract SIM installed and not jailbroken your phone, or (b) if you have an unlocked phone sold in a country that does not allow Apple to hold your iPhone hostage. If you have jailbroken your phone and unlocked it yourself, stay away for now.

If you have one of those originally unlocked phones, you gain Internet Tethering. If it's not in Settings/General/Network, you may need to add your APN settings first, which you can do from your iPhone at help.benm.at.

Btw: the iPhone feels pretty quaint after having used a Nexus One for two weeks.

Comments

Volker - thanks for this. I'd decided to ignore that update on the basis of the headline changes, but this is useful!

Now installed.

The Original APN Changer ( http://www.unlockit.co.nz) has been updated for 3.1.3 to set your APN for Data and Tethering for Carrier Unlocked iPhones.

Craig Whitmore, 2010-02-03

Tethering on 3.1.3 with German BASE works like a charm on my 3GS, bought in Italy. Only via Bluetooth so far, but I'm optimistic I'll get it to work with USB as well.

If only your continuous praises of the Nexus One wouldn't make me want to try one.

Henning Störk, 2010-02-03

So if one is under contract with a provider, say O2, would you still expect to have to pay for tethering?

Stuart McIntyre, 2010-02-03

I would not. Your carrier might disagree. But how would he tell?

Volker Weber, 2010-02-03

Stuart: try enabling tethering on your (unbroken) O2 iPhone, see where that gets you… :-) They have to take their (additional) pound of flesh.

Ben Poole, 2010-02-03

Well, they have to charge you for Internet traffic. And then they have to charges you when you actually plan to use it.

Volker Weber, 2010-02-03

Tethering did work through the benm.at instructions prior to 3.1 (I think it was 3.1 that broke it), and was covered by the unlimited O2 data plan.

I'll try again once I get my iPhone to 3.1.3.

Stuart McIntyre, 2010-02-03

i kept my locked t-mobile iPhone at 3.0 so tethering still works - still 6 Month to go with t-mobile :P

Samuel Orsenne, 2010-02-04

Will this work on AT&T in the us Im still using os 3.0 and don't wanta risk updating if this really doesn't work....

Todd dal, 2010-02-05

I have 3.1 os will the new tether on benm work for me

Peter Foster, 2010-02-07

if you have an unlocked phone, yes. If not, not.

Volker Weber, 2010-02-07

So if my 3G is not unlocked I shouldn't download the moblie config from benm?

Peter Foster, 2010-02-07

im from malaysia....using celcom.... update 3.1.3 enable me to use iphone for internet tetheringlah......damn cool.... damn fast oso....

jakatheswaren selvaretnam, 2010-02-26

I'm in the USA will the instructions at http://www.unlockit.co.nz work for me on AT &T??? I would like to be able to use tethering and i had updated to 3.1.3. Thanks!!!

Dominic DeSantis, 2010-03-04

I had os 3.1.2 and jailbroke the phone for awhile. I then did an itunes restore back to the unbroken state. Have now upgraded to 3.1.3. I selected the Tethering option in the iphone settings and connected with USB to the computer. nothing seemed to happen. I went back into setting >General>Network and the Tethering option is no longer there at all. What now?

Steven Payne, 2010-03-09

Second paragraph from the top.

Volker Weber, 2010-03-09

I tried downloading the profile from the Help.benm.at for At&t in the U.S. but I get a message saying that the formate is invalid. I get the same message when creating a profile manually.

Steven Payne, 2010-03-09

Works perfect! Back online baby! Thanks!!

Steven Zwerink, 2010-03-09

Steven Payne, the essential word is "unlocked".

Volker Weber, 2010-03-09

In my first post i mentioned that I restored the phone with iTunes. I thought that that would locked the iphone and reset it as it was when it was new. If an iphone has been unlocked can it be locked again? If so How?

Steven Payne, 2010-03-10

Restoring it does nothing to the unlocked state. If you bought it with an AT&T contract, it is locked to AT&T and will only accept SIMs from AT&T. Phones locked to AT&T will also be managed by AT&T and if they don't want you to tether you won't be able to.

If you have an unlocked iPhone, you can do what you you want. From 3.1.3 on.

Volker Weber, 2010-03-10

Hi all, does it mean you guys who bought unlocked version, were on 3.1.2 and not able to use internet tethering and now after upgrade to 3.1.3 you are able to use internet tethering?? Really?? No kidding?

Asi Christo, 2010-03-18

Nevermind, now internet tethering working on 3.1.3.
No need for jailbreaking and pay anything.......phiewww
Thanks for this post Volker, otherwise I will keep on waiting for another release of jailbreaking on 3.1.3

I have an iPhone 3G that was on O2 in the UK. I got O2 to unlock it and before & after I updated to 3.1.3 I had the internet tethering option available in settings/general/network although my MacBook Pro would not connect to the iPhone to actually tether.

I went to the benm.at site on my iphone and downloaded the profile ( thought i'd give it a go because tethering is very useful sometimes even though I don't have 3G where I am ) tethering still wouldn't work, so I restored the Iphone to its original settings and then backed up, now I don't have the tethering option any more just a button that says set up tethering which takes me to the O2 website to pay for it !!

Can you give me any advice on how to get the Internet Tethering settings onto the iPhone in Settings/Network/Cellular Data Network/internet tethering ?

Thanks
Dominic.

Dominic Bennett, 2010-03-20

I am using the iPhone in the US with AT&T and was stuck on the OS 3.0 with the original BenM carrier profile and Internet Tethering working. I didn't want to upgrade to 3.1 because it would break tethering, but after reading this and other posts that 3.1.3 was safe, I upgraded and tethering is still working. I did a reset on the phone just to be sure it didn't disappear - tethering is still working.

It seems that 3.1.3 is a safe upgrade for those using the BenM 3.0 tethering hack.

Chris Beckett, 2010-03-26

I have iPhone 3G OS 3.1.3 and tried the BenM website it says: Invalid Profile, Profile format not recognized. It doesn't work. I have never used tethering so I am not sure if this is the issue.

Filip Saprkin, 2010-04-01

I have the iPhone 3gs 3.1.3 and I went to help.benm.at/ and I tryed to download it it said profile not valid and I don't know what to do please help and my phone is not jailbroken

Hector marquez, 2010-04-02

So i had an jailbroken iphone 3gs running 3.1.2 but for some reason i had it froze and i had to restore it and it updated to 3.1.3, how can i get it tether again?

Ricardo Lopez, 2010-04-04

I have a carrier unlocked iPhone 3G, with 3.1.3 FW, I added the benm.at profile but even after phone restart tethering still doesn't work...
