Shutdown has failed because shutdown is running

hm, shutdown Shut Down to shut down your computer. Perhaps bashing the message designer would help :D

Been there. :)
However I clicked cancel first and then told the PC to shut down again. I wonder what happens if one clicks on the 'Shut down now' button. If Windows closes the shut down process in order to shut the PC down, then the shut down process would stop, wouldn't it? Seems to be a reversed hen & egg problem. ;)

Amusing certainly, but not MS' fault on this occasion.

There is no Windows component named Shut Down. What has happened is that a third party program has detected a shut down in progress and has changed its title bar text to read "Shut Down". This program has then failed to respond to the OS' request to quit, possibly because it is waiting for the user to confirm that it is OK to quit. Windows then reports that it could not shut down because it is waiting for Shut Down to quit.

The fault is with that third party program which should put something more helpful in its title bar text.

It can be similarly annoying when trying to use Task Manager to kill a rogue process, only to find that Task Manager (which itself is just another process) has gone rogue! Eventually, you just have to reach for the power button.

Although I haven't yet encountered that little game with Windows 7.

At least it shows you a program that is actually running - even not the right one. My computer shows the same behaviour but no program to stop.

What would you do? ;-)
a) cancel shutdown to close program ???
b) shut down anyway and kill program ???

Pardon my ignorance - - but what platform is this screenshot taken from?

Jim Boling, 2010-03-31

@Jim that would be either Vista or Windows 7.
