A welcome addition to iPhone OS 4
by Volker Weber
Sometimes it's the small things that open new opportunities. This switch will let you use an iPhone without a mobile data tariff, WLAN only.

Why would it?
A mobile internet plan is also needed for 2g traffic. It's slow but not less expensive.
As long as one cannot disable GSM-traffic there will still be a need for a plan like this with an "always online phone" like the Iphone.
My 2 cents.
Look beyond the first switch.
Completely different topic but same category of change:
In iPhone OS 4, when you press and hold 'u' on the on-screen keyboard the 'ü' umlaut is now selected by default and you can just release your finger to insert it.
In previous OS versions you had to swipe your finger slightly to generate the umlaut.
Small change but nice though.
That is already in iPad.
