BlackBerry 6 Compatibility

by Volker Weber

From the BlackBerry 6 press release:

BlackBerry 6 will debut on the new BlackBerry(R) Torch(TM) smartphone (announced today) available from AT&T on August 12 and it is also designed to run on select BlackBerry smartphones already in market. Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead, the new OS is expected to be available for the BlackBerry(R) Bold(TM) 9700, BlackBerry(R) Bold(TM) 9650 and BlackBerry(R) Pearl(TM) 3G, as well as future BlackBerry smartphones.

No such luck for other 9xxx devices like the Bold 9000 or the Storm 95xx. That is a major disappointment.

Comments

Yes, It's a a major disappointment.
I really really hope that somehow they retrofit the webkit browser to be available on older devices...

Well, it's not like AT&T has even granted BB9000 users OS5 yet.

9700? - Check. Phew.

Martin Böhm, 2010-08-03

At least I am happy to see the 9700 with it's 256 MB RAM supported (in some kind?). The 9000 (128 MB) will meet the same fate as the iPhone 2G...

Peter Meuser, 2010-08-03

@craig well but the OS5 is available for the Bold 9000 and it is very easy to install even if your provider has not tested and approved it

Thomas Einwaller, 2010-08-03

@thomas. True, but I use what my users have to use (I eat my tasty dogfood), and I don't recommend or support running non-carrier-supported OSes for my users.

So, No OS5 for me.

or OS6

*sigh*

Craig Wiseman, 2010-08-04

@Craig: Globally we would have to rollout 183 different "carrier-supported" firmware versions for our 20000+ devices. This is a nightmare to support and update.
I heard that RIM is about to supply one generalized firmware image per device which can be used globally. Yes, you might probably loose carrier support - but they are must often not very helpful even with a premium support contract. As long as they do not hold you liable for damage, I can live just fine without their support ...

Heribert Schlebbe, 2010-08-04

@Heribert. That sounds like a very reasonable policy for your situation.

Since my folks are all in one country, on one carrier, I have the ability to leverage that carrier.
