HP announces webOS 2.0 and Palm Pre 2

If you just bought a Pre Plus in Germany, don't feel bad about it. Looks like none of the German operators has bought into the Pre 2 yet. It's going to be available at the end of the week in France, but there are no announcements for Germany (yet). Looks like the operators are busy pushing the iPhone 4, and to a lesser extent, the new Nokia N8 and the new Windows Phones.

The Pre 2 gets a new glass screen, a new bezel around the upper half. And it loses the fugly MicroUSB door. Best of all, it finally gets a 1 GHz processor. I have been pimping my Pre Plus to 1 GHz as well, without any issues, when the screen is on. You need a different kernel and a governor to do that, but it's quite easy to setup.

Existing devices will get the new webOS 2.0 software "in the coming months", whatever that means. The carriers need to certify the OS, and then it's rolled out OTA to your phone. There is no need to talk about the features until it's there. My guess is that it will only take a few weeks, not months.

Since my employer keeps me in iPhones, I'm hoping to pick one of these up in February or March when my new-every-2 comes due with Verizon. They should have them by then.

New-every-2? What does this mean?

I'm dissapointed about the new pre, no innovations, almost none improvements. And even with 1GHZ the palm pre is not very fast. Sometimes I think the overclocking of the palm pre only works in my mind. The situation is really sad. The form factor is good, but the hardware is crap. And they did not very much to improve that.

So, HP Palm, you have to do something really impressing next year, otherwise your gone or WebOS will only have success in a new printer.
