Sorry IBM, but these are not valid IP addresses

by Volker Weber

Treat QA as an expense center and decide to reduce costs. Result:

Server.Task = SMTP Server: Providing service for 123.45.678.910
Server.Task = SMTP Server: Providing service for 123.45.678.911
Server.Task = SMTP Server: Providing service for 123.45.678.912

Hint: IP v4 addresses are 32 bit, expressed as 4 octets. So they only go to 255.

it looks like they solved the IPv4 problem.. without using IPv6 :)

Perhaps it's a VERY creative way to minimize mail traffic?

To be fair, it is a problem to find suitable IPv4 addresses to use as examples. You run the risk of using someone else's real IP address or of using an address which is reserved for some special purpose (loopback, multicast, RFC1918).

Mind you, IBM has plenty of its own IP addresses. They could use one of those...

Come on - why not use 192.168.*.* -or- 10.20.*.* ?
