Skype adds video call to iOS app

You need an iPhone 4 or an iPod touch with front facing camera to place video calls. Older models with iOS4 can participate in one way video calls. I tried calling from an iPod touch to a Macbook Pro, and video calls worked over both Wi-Fi and 3G. The other party had to manually switch on their video camera, so it's a bit more complicated than Facetime, but it does work over 3G.

Well, also with an iPhone 3Gs you can place video calls. you just have to place you and your mobile in front of a mirror. ;-)

It appears that with the iPhone exclusivety gone, some crazy pro- active carrier- mindedness 'accidently' and 'quietly' went away with it. I like that, I might try out the Skype app after all with that working.

Interesting. I wonder what codec Skype is using? Do the leverage the build in in iOS (which would be what? H263/264?) or do they use their own VP7? In the later case there's hope for all other Skype clients (like the Grandstream GXV3140 to gain full video interoperability.

Volker, did you ever try fring? It worked flawlessly even from Skype to mobile. I know, Skype isn't supported anymore but it's still working from fring to fring and even on different platforms.

Yes, I did. But I try not to add too many channels.

Just tested, thx vowe:
- video works with Skype on Linux
- video doesn't work with the Grandstream GXV3140
Sound works everywhere.
Bandwidth is an issue in Singapore (the international gateways, not the local speed)
