The artist formerly known as Lotus Connections

by Volker Weber

IBM Lotus Connections is being renamed to IBM Connections. IBM Connections consists of social software that is enabled to take advantage of the broad capabilities in IBM's software portfolio. For example, Connections is now packaged with certain IBM Cognos Business Intelligence offerings to support integration between the two products. This naming change better aligns with that effort to create IBM solutions which involve multiple brands designed to address our customers specific business needs.

What is next? Sametime?

Nightingale, I hear you trapsin' ...

no surprise for they who attended LS11, and Sametime might be next,..or Quickr, .....or Live,.....

Tommy Oustad, 2011-04-05

IBM DB/2, IBM Mashups, IBM Analytics, IBM System Monitoring, IBM Endpoint Management, IBM Cloud Hosting, IBM Portal, IBM Mainframe, IBM Consulting ....
Do we actually need all these brands in between?

I would say no.

And there is enough Lotus available in other product contexts

... IBM Notes Client, ...

Karsten Lehmann, 2011-04-05

Unlikely. Notes is an even bigger liability than Lotus. Next on my list is an IBM XPages server (without mail). It would not be backwards compatible, but you could build a Designer that runs on Mac and Linux as well.

And with an amazing NO support for FF 4.0 or Chrome. This will be "fixed" later...

Albert Buendia, 2011-04-05

@Albert Buendia:

FF4 IS Supported with "Interim Fix 401.8HF6 for iNotes 8.5.2 Fix Pack 2"

@Werner, I was talking about IBM Connections http access not Lotus iNotes.Thanks.

Albert Buendía, 2011-04-05

In my point of view it's a honest move by IBM.
IBM Connections is based on Websphere/DB/2/Tivoli and naming it Lotus Connections was part of the failed strategy to merge the Websphere branch with the Lotus branch, a.k.a. Workplace client.
And I would expect Sametime to be rebranded next, because it's the same here.
I think the Lotus brand should be seen as "compatibility mode" software branch, [IBM's|the] future is taken place in Connections and Sametime, not in Lotus Domino and not in Lotus Notes anymore, despite XPages.

Christian Henseler, 2011-04-05

Now we know why there was virtually no Lotus Notes info at the last Lotusphere. I'm hoping they plan on making a new start with Notes 9.0 and dropping both the Lotus and Notes names would be a big step forward.

IBM Mail... here we come.

Personally, I like the name IBM Revolutions... think of the marketing possibilities!!! And rename Domino to IBM 360 Server.

Thomas Leriche, 2011-04-05

@Thomas: Great idea. I would like to do the programming on a 360/40 using punch cards! On these machines, you were able to see the machine working. And if you put a AM radio on top of it, you could even hear the program running.

P.S. For those young fellows who never saw punch cards: Here you can create your own: http://www.kloth.net/services/cardpunch.php

Time to recycle another product name... my suggestion:

IBM Agenda.
