Remember "IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing"?

by Volker Weber

Here is a list of current product names:

IBM Connections
IBM Lotus Sametime
IBM Lotus Quickr
IBM Lotus Notes & Domino
IBM LotusLive Collaboration & Meetings Suite
IBM LotusLive Collaboration Suite
IBM LotusLive Engage
IBM LotusLive Connections
IBM LotusLive Meetings
IBM LotusLive Events
IBM LotusLive Notes
IBM LotusLive iNotes
IBM LotusLive Symphony
IBM LotusLive Labs

Try and rename them without using "Lotus". Connections is done. Sametime is obvious. Play with "Collaboration Solutions" and "Social Business". Add a little bit of cloud. Obfuscate. Then come back in the future to see how well you did.

Kleine Korrektur: Nur noch IBM Sametime

So IBM Sametime 8.5.2 just shipped but it still says IBM Lotus Sametime all over the screens, documentation etc. In case they change their minds I guess :-D

Carl Tyler, 2011-06-14

Yep, Sametime : done
Quickr : obvious
Notes & Domino : hmmm - when ?

For LotusLive so many many names.... LotusLive is a brand so what about IBMLive ?

Mark Myers, 2011-06-14

Sametime lost the Lotus moniker with the last 8.5.2 update. While on the announcement webcast we confirmed it with the IBMers on the call.

Chris Miller, 2011-06-14

The first three are simple. The fun starts with Notes and LotusLive.

Francois, Microsoft tried that. Mark, you can do better. Oh, and you may throw in "XPages". When Notes Server was renamed Domino Server, Domino was the cool http thing. "IBM XPages Server for Social Business" has something of IBM OS/2 Warp Server for e-business.

That's how IBM Marketing rolls.

A turd by any other name...

Jeff Gilfelt, 2011-06-15

The Sametime screen in 8.5.2 they did update to say IBM Sametime, looks ehm well not very good...

IBM Notes Server
IBM Social Business Server

Keith Brooks, 2011-06-15

I don't care one way or the other. IBM "Marketing," such as it is, doesn't care either. Why should I care what they name their products? The end result is . . . what?

Gregg Eldred, 2011-06-15

"That's how IBM Marketing rolls."

I love that a german used this phrase. :-)

Erik Brooks, 2011-06-15

Maybe it is time for more product name reuse, and less names.

IBM Quickr
IBM Social Server
IBM Cloudscape
IBM Cloudscape Agenda
IBM Symphony
IBM Virtual Labs

Adam Osborne, 2011-06-15

IBM SocialSuite (figure Carl will like that one!)

Alan Lepofsky, 2011-06-15

We already know (via Mr Brill @iLug 2010 ) that 'Notes' will not be used for the next fat client.

Mmm. LotusLive.. Hows about:

IBM Collaborative Cloud ?

And the sub-grouped items such as:

IBM Collaborative Cloud Mail Applications Instant Messaging Live ?

Of course, even IBM might think thats too long. So hows about shortening it to:

IBM cc:Mail ?

Eiiii,

All IBM software have been packaged in a IBM Smart Suite for Smarter Planet.

SmartSuite returns ;)

Albert Buendia, 2011-06-15

Never said Notes is going away. Said I consider it on the table. More likely, it will be Notes with a modifier (and no, not "social", that has so high a score on buzzword bingo that branding has banned it from product names).

Ed Brill, 2011-06-15

Ah. Obviously I had misheard your statements in that room. I apologise for any confusion.

I am pretty sure the AV guy has a video.

Volker Weber, 2011-06-15

and I stand by my statement.

Ed Brill, 2011-06-15

IBM Lotus Forms
IBM Lotus Mashups
IBM Lotus Expeditor
IBM Websphere Portal

Albert is right: Everything (and that would include Branding) needs to be made as simple as possible but not simpler.
