Fixing the iPhone home button

by Volker Weber

Is your iPhone home button not working as it used to? Try this:

1. Press the power button until the slider appears, then release.
2. Press the home button until the icons appear, then release.

Does this procedure fix your home button?

Too late to check. My co-workers phone got replaced instantly by Apple.

You should trust the professionals on this one Volker.. ;-)
It's most likely a hardware issue, not software.

Should your iPhone still be under warranty, you'll get a free replacement as also Martin confirms.

Pieterjan, the interesting thing is that this procedure seems to work for my iPhone. And a few others, if you read comments on my G+ posting. I am still not convinced, that this isn't voodoo.

Well, thanks for pointing to a new (potential) solution for a common problem.
I will check this one out in the future, prior to replacing the home button contacts.

Those steps are for killing applications that have crashed.

Simon, suspect you’re thinking of the old (i.e. pre-iOS4) reset routine:

iPhone and iPod touch: Frozen and unresponsive

Interestingly, that process was documented as a method to sort the device out when it wasn’t responding to button presses. So I wonder whether the steps outlined now initiate some kind of calibration process? This wouldn’t address a hardware fault clearly, but it may shed light on why so many iPhone 4 users report that these steps work for them.

I finally had a chance to experiment the magic trick..
Much to my surprise it worked like a charm. Thanks.

Yup. Worked for me! Voodoo or not, many thanks!

Vesey Crichton, 2011-10-10

Worked for me as well.

Awesome tip, seriously. My iPhone was cured right after reading about it. :-)

Awesome -- my Home button had needed to be punched twice for ages and I was just resigned to it being old age of the Phone. Works like it used to. Thanks.

solely pressing the home button for a few seconds doesn't do the trick?
i don't think its a software related problem, only the force on the home button is improving the response of it for a few clicks...

and by the way - it doesn't work for me at all. :(

After a few days I am less impressed. Probably it us just voodoo.
